I cleaned some upholstery for a lady a few weeks ago.
She has just emailed me asking what the cost to "Scotchguarding", (other protectors are available), the suite would be.

To be honest I hardly ever push protecting, but as I have been asked I will try and get an idea as to what others charge for the work.
So what is the cost per seat/chair do you get?

Half the price of the clean. Like you I don't push protector and if you're risking the chance of a phonecall after the spillage doesn't come off like a non stick frying pan, then charge high.

Its incredible that people don't think twice about paying around £250 for stain guarding their suite when bought from new.

We have stain guarded many suites by reminding people of this and charging around one third of that price.

Yeh but do you offer a stain warranty within that price??
we do alot work for Stainguard on their warranty claims

This morning I had something that comes up a lot. I was cleaning a suite for a new customer and she said it had been protected by a previous cleaner but she didn't think he had done it. When I asked why she thought that, she said well it's got dirty.

When I recommend protector I always lay it on thick not to expect miracles and often I pull it away from them and they always say, no do it. This way you won't have an unhappy customer going elsewhere even though you did a good job.

the worry is if the protector is not up to the standard the customer expects ( however well you explain ) they still could end up blaming the cc and get someone els in the next time.

i give it away for free if applicable and only to carpets. figured that way i just explain that we use a lower cost protector which doesn't perform miracles and the customers so far haven't had a problem with this. perhaps losing out on some money but i didn't want to push it much before either and customers seem to be pleased when i say it.

I have customers who push protector on every job. Carpet cleaners miss out on this valuable income stream.

I've just read on scs site from 31p per day over 5 years so @ £2.17 a week over 260 weeks to me that's an awful lot of money but you could clean it and protect it twice in 5 years.

I think most people don't sell protector for 3 reasons

1 scared of rejection or upsetting the customer so don't ask for the sale
2 don't know how to apply it or what it really does
3 nevertheless real conviction in it
