Hi

im trying to buy a combo crew van for work but every time i see mileage of 70,000 plus it puts me off

what would you say is a good mileage to look for in a second hand van ?

Hi,

Mileage does not really bother me with the vans today they can clock really high mileages without any
problems. Just make sure the service history is spot on and also check that the cambelt has
been changed at the correct mileage or intervals.

Depends on what your buying. I've never bought an Escort or P100 with less than 100,000 miles. Older Fords seem to develop nasty rust problems eventually with  Transit being the worst offender. All the new stuff doesn't seem to rot and there are plenty of Peugeot / Citroen based vans around with 200,000 +

Same as previously said: Commercial condition beats mileage.

70k is nothing, even 100k if the condition is good. I bought a transit connect with 100k on and its never let me down

agreed. go bycondition and especially service history. my previous work car,  a 3 year old passat, had 117k on it. it was by far better than a car 3 years older with only 50k miles, as it had been looked after. had 170k and still going. so long as looked after they are good for 200k and more.

obviously the higher mileage the more chance of bigger problems, a small electrical fault can cost several hundred. but this can happen at any age. I bought my caddy with 45k on it as wanted a lower mileage vehicle, it needs driveshaft and fly wheel doing soon! not what I was hoping! either way you win some you loose some! luck of the draw to some extent!

you can always replace an engine,  if its in good condition and at the right price  then might be worth buying

Make sure it has a decent clutch, just had mine replaced, £881 ouch

Also old mot's are worth looking at to track the mileage.
150,000 miles + is easily achievable from a well serviced and looked after diesel engine.
Beware of forged service history which does happen.
And if possible get someone from the motor trade who you can trust to check the vehicle out for you.
There is a lot of crap for sale so beware!

  Service history is good, but from a main dealer? Sorry but I do not trust main dealers, a local place with a good reputation is much better IMO.

vans are always a difficult one mate, so you should pay more attention to the previous owner than the mileage... this is why, in theory a diesel should do 200-000 miles, however, if the van has been driven by a big hairy builder who smashes it all over i doubt it would se 90, however an ex parcel delivery van oild changed all the time etc will do loads more.

pay attention to who your buying from not whats on the clock, even a newish van can give you expensive problems when its not uncommon to pick up an 98 escort and run it for years
