I say.
Hi, my names Paul, one of your neighbours has asked me to clean their Windows, which I will be doing on a 6 weekly basis. Would you be interested in a quote for your own property whilst I'm in the area?

If you already have at least one customer, then I'd say that I am expanding my window cleaning round in this area and was wondering..................
It's good to give the impression of experience rather than something you are doing which is new IMHO.

Keep it simple and brief. Dress smart/casual. Avoid suits/ties/briefcases as it would make you look too much like a salesperson or a Mormon and they might not answer the door. Just a small notebook in the pocket and a pen is enough. Try to avoid doing it in the dark as some won't answer the door (difficult now the darker nights are here).

and i used to canvass with my belt and pockets on too. i am certain this helped convince people i was who and what i was claiming to be - especially older ones.

I say something along the lines of:
"Hello. My name is John, and I am offering a window cleaning service to yourself and your neighbours. Is this something that you would be interested in at all?"
I say this to everyone, with small variations to keep it fresh, and try to maintain a positive attitude at all times.
I am dressed ready to work, as I look to start there and then if possible.
John.

You have to remeber, when someone knocks on the door the householder is immediatly thinking about how to get rid of you.
I simply say, "Window Cleaning!" with a big smile, a slightly off stance sway look at them directly in the eye, try to dribble from your mouth a bit, and twitch your eye on occasions.
works well

Hello, I left a leaflet about window cleaning a couple of days ago.........
By that time its usually "no thanks" or "hold on, I'll call the wife"
Quick, easy and to the point
