How much prespray?
« on: September 05, 2011, 06:56:25 pm »
Help needed for one of the resident newbies.

How much microsplitting prespay should be put down on say a 5mx5m room, before agitation and HWE ? Im arranging  to get on a IICRC course in the near future, any help would be greatly appreciated in the meantime.

CHEERS! Paul.  ;)

Hi Paul

I usually spray just enough to lightly mist the carpet.I would say about just under a litre as a rough guess seems to work for me .

 good Agitation is the key

In most cases you will require no prespray or very little on at least 50% of the carpet. Concentrate your main efforts on the tracking and heavily soiled areas.

As suggested by Neil you only need to mist microsplitters and when aggitating just " feather in " the surrounding areas.

An IICRC course and certification has always been high on my priorities list, the problem for me is the 800 mile round trip and 4 days out of my busy life. (its a flight in both directions, hire car, hotel 3 nights etc)

I am getting good results with my equipment and the little knowledge that I have gained over the past 3 months or so, but I do realise that I have tons to learn.

I am an oven cleaner, but due to demand I have slowly moved into CC'ing, I dont advertise yet and only take on work where I know I can get good results. Mainly friends and family and my oven customers. I will start advertising the CC'ing in the New Year when Ive done some courses and I'm a bit more clued up.  8)

You do NOT need to travel as far or seek paper qualifications to make you a competent and professional operator in this industry.

There are a number of PRACTICAL one day courses relatively close to you.

There are two companies in Newcastle and one near St Andrews who offer fairly comprehensive " hands on " training where you can gain enough information to give you the confidence and knowledge you may lack.

Many in this industry started " blind " and learned through experience, however, you have the massive resources of the internet available and by using the " search facility " you will find the answers to virtually any question you might have.

If you like the idea of having paper qualifications this can be obtained through the NCCA or the BICS.

Who is Mick.

It is his real name, and if you read threads and post properly as you suggest you would have known that from a thread a few months back..

I was simply stating that a carpet cleaning course was needed. This is what has happened in this industry... hello............ wake up people............ doesnt even know how much presray to put down. The question is........... would you let a person clean your carpets when they have had no training? and well by the sounds of it doesnt know what they are doing. I am not knocking the guy ....but please, do the training before you clean peoples carpets. Simply by not knowing what you are doing is taking a massive risk and at the end of the day if you dont know how much prespray to put down.......can you actually identifie the fibres and construction. Whet you gonna do with a woven .....shrink springs to ming. Look mate do the training as you are taking a big risk in losing you business with just a simple job that goes wrong. PROTECT YOURSELF and do the training. Its hard work building a business and well you are taking a big risk. Yeh..... Yeh...... people will slate me for writing this but at the end of the day I am trying to help you and do not want anyone to lose thier business through someone suing them over something that was avoidable simply by learning the basics. My other advice would be to make sure you have insurance including treatment risk.

No fair comment mate - same in all areas of cleaning, if its available do it first!! - after training you may decide this game is not for you :o

So Monty,  what youre saying is that every successful carpet cleaner on here went on a formal training course before picking up a wand? surely not.

I appreciate what youre saying and agree that training is paramount, but I thought that the more experienced CC'ers on here wouldnt mind enlightening a newbie in the basic fundamentals until I get on a course. All the carpets that I have cleaned so far have been for friends and families, and some of my regular oven customers as a favour, they know my experience in carpet cleaning, or lack of it.

The IICRC certification and NCCA membership is important for me, as there are many people popping up round here with their ex rental rug doctor machines or equivalent, claiming professional service and results. It'll be my USP.

In the meantime, I'll just keep putting the prespray down with the watering can! agitate with the bog brush and finish off with the henry!

Lighten up guy, I hear what your saying!  ;)

Consider a 'buddy' or an experienced cleaner not in your area but not too far away whose willing to have you tag along the odd day . The real life hands on experience will be invalueable and would put into practice what you learn on a course. Having someone on the end of the phone is very useful also.

no pre-spray on 50% of the carpet, how does that work then. do you only charge for 50% of a full room clean?
