[GB Window Cleaning]

okay so this is the first time i will be looking for an accountant, ive put this task off for long enough now!
so im looking for some general advice on whats the basics i should know?

ive been told on here not to get a chartered accountant, but thats all i know!

any help very very welcome!

The best accountant in the UK believe it or not is the Tax Man!

Go and see your local office, ask their advice, ask for leaflets ect....
Ask what you can and can not claim for, he will help you out no end.....
he will even fill in your self assesment forms for you.

And best of all......................... he won't charge you a penny for his service!

Just walk in and say HELP!

A good accountant will save you lots of money but that service will cost you lots of money.

If your not buying and selling things, employing people or VAT registered then your books should be very simple, in comings and outgoings, save a fortune and go get the free advice and help that is there for the taking.

I once walked into his office with a bill for £1600 an hour later I left with a cheque from HIM for £500, I was on a plane to Magaluff within two days! Result!

That's nonesense to be honest GB. Only reason could be the cost. A chartered accountand might cost you more but they are usually better qualified. However, most sole trading w/c'ers accounts should be quite simple.

That said, mine are chartered & I can say without doubt that they have saved my much more than what they have cost.

oh right, i wont be so bothered about looking for uncharted accountatnts from now on then!

im gonna phone around tomorrow and get three quotes i recon and see who seems the best and cheapest!

well i took your advise and walked into the tax office today but they wasnt much help to be honest
they said they carnt help me with much except for helping me fill in my tax return and send me on the courses they do

i didnt admit it to the receptionist but ive been on the "basics" course and it was all too much to take in.
so i never went back for the advanced course and just thought id pay an accountant to do the thinking for me as it all seems too comlicated

The not going for  "chartered" bit was only a suggestion.  IMO you would be paying an unnecessarily high.  However, that is only my opinion.  .

Pretty much what I said I thought.  It's unnecessary to pay for "chartered" when the books are reasonably simple.  I wouldn't tell someone not to do it though.

if you're a sole trader it might be worth asking a couple of local people who do their books.  lots of taxi drivers will ise accountants who will do your tax return for you and not charge the earth.  they ll also often be used to people just handing them receipts and invoices and having to churn thru it.  or just call about some small local tradesmen to ask if they use a good person.  failing all that your local franchise 'tax assist' accountant should be pretty good.  i dont use mine yet, but when i get a little bigger i will start to use them.  i;ve had a couple of preliminary meetings with my local tax assist guy and he seems very good indeed, and not too expensive.

That doesn't mean that none chartered are no good GB. To be honest, I didn't set out for a chartered one, it just happened when I was in the same situation as you are in now.

Mine is £300 + vat. They initially gave me some free time to talk about my business & advise me on keeping books etc.

I sort all my expenses into categories & create a statement for them to work from.
