apparently you should use a softer brush head than you need for windows, and dont have you water temp on too high if hotwash

Yes big time and your public liability will not pay out either. If you scratch them you can reduce the working capacity by up to 20% in just one clean. I got this info from a guy that installs them in my home town, he said leave well alone, he say's they now never need cleaning.

i've heard the opposite!
i understand they need cleaning about twice a year to stay at their maximun effectiveness.
here's a brush advertised as suitable for cleaning them
http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/shop/new-products/hiflo-solar-brush-soft.html
i intend to start offering to clean them

I wouldn't if i were you, first you have to alter your liability insurance to cover this and i'm told its a lot.
All i'm saying is what i have been told but a solar panel installer. As the insurance side of things i inquired when i altered mine to cover guttering washing and guttering vacuming.
