Cost of most things up north are cheaper all round. In Scotland, our car auctions are full of English buyers who then transport the cars south and still re sell for a profit. A four bed detached house in the countryside can typically sell for £250.000, what would you get for that south of Birmingham?. On window cleaning, from what I have seen when visiting down south, windows on houses are larger by quite a bit and many have bays top and bottom with small hoppers above. Typically up here the same house would have a smaller flat pane usually with no hoppers. Takes literally just a few minutes for me at least to clean a 3 bed semi detached house. Competition in Scotland is fierce. Window cleaners are everywhere. Good money can still be made make no mistake. The more compact the better as it soon all mounts up. Easy. ;D

Cost of living in the South is much higher than the North.
When I worked in Industry for a nationwide company, salaries for people living in London were about 30% more for the same job than in North Yorkshire (Sheffield).
By the time the higher cost of living including travelling expenses to work was taken into consideration, I believe we were better off up North.

Services have always commanded a higher price 'down south.'

I quoted a large 3 bedroom place semi with lounge bay window last week at a £9.00 every 6 weeks. She nearly fainted as her current window cleaner charges £7.00 every 4 weeks and they thought he was ripping them off. I didn't persue to the issue any further because he told me they didn't have a window cleaner and that's why I quoted. (If he starts a relationship on a lie, what next I always ask myself.) Infact over a year, I under-quoted and was happy to walk away. Brand new car in the drive though.

Most trad guys here price something like that at £5.00 every 2 weeks or £7.00 once a month. I try to quote on a slightly longer frequency of 6 weeks to get my visit price up, but most cannot work things out past the price.

I would love to be able to quote £12 - £15.00 for a 3 bed semi up here, but only under extraordinary circumstances would you get it here.

I've got alot of Brit custies here. All soldiers living in MOD houses. The types of houses are basically all the same. There are about 7 or 8 different builds. Windows are all upvc and to top it all, they ALL open inwards, so every custy could clean their own if they wanted to.
Having a windy here is abit of "Feeling" at home (Germans only have in & outs done on appointment) and the tradition of having a windy. If anyone started a milk round here, they would be over-run with custies.

All these custies come from all over the UK. We've got a couple of custies from central Scotland who used to pay 3.50 a clean when they lived in a 2 bed terraced, here they pay €14. They have a choice of 2 or 3 windies. We are the only full time uniformed mob here. We have about 70% of everything that's on offer really. Not being big headed, but the other WC's aren't running in top gear really and are happy with what they have.

I know that it would be harder for us to get €14 or €15 for a 2 bed semmi here if there was a Scottish unit in residence. It's the mind set up north. If it was possible to get prices the same all over UK, it would have happened long ago.

Although houses may be cheaper up north, insurance and fuel aren't. The weather that they have to work in is bloody awfull and don't forget, a custy paying 3.50 a clean is lesslikely to moan about being cleaned in bad weather than a custy paying 13 quid.

Another reason for the low prices in the North is custom and practice. If everyone pitches lower prices then that becomes what people expect to pay, and its hard to break out of.

Oh yes there are the £4 cleaners down here as well, just not so many. Mostly old boys who have never put their prices up.
