I have bought a new SLX 22 and wondered how you all maintain yours.
I have heard that furniture polish can be used to keep everything smooth but have heard that certain ones shouldn't be used. Is it the silicon free or wax free ones i should be avoiding?  I have used Ptfe spray in the past for my CLX but it's £5.00 per can

i just use WD40.never had any problems.you probably could use any old furniture polish knocking around.someone on here recommended ceramic oil.google it and have a look.


i think it was that chap in holland who recommended it(think he used to be called PINGU!)

Avoid anything that contains a solvent of any kind (like wd40) Because it can attack the resin in the carbon. Listen to what Gardiners recommend. Give them a  ring if you are not sure. SLX poles aren't particularly cheap.

Furniture polish can also be used if desired, but anything with wax in it should be avoided as this will build up a layer that will ultimately attract dirt.
WD-40 is an absolute "AVOID" as it is designed to penetrate and can lead to glue failure and ultimately even carbon failure.
The best advice as contained in the guide above is to keep the pole regularly cleaned, this will prolong the life of any type of pole.

If you take good care of it, the pole will last you years I have one of the mk1's that's well over 2 1/2 years old is used regularly and still feels like a new pole.

I don't see how you do that, my poles are always on the way out after about 6-9 months. You get uneven wear on the 1st and second sections. I used to repair them but now frankly I don't think its worth it. I just chuck them and get a new one every year. They are so cheap in real terms its not worth bothering.

Yep, I upgraded the clamps about a year ago to the new type ones. Much better.

been using a mk1 slx for 3 years, used as a main pole every day (we work in the rain/snow) and the pole only ever gets a clean once a week unless some grit gets in (in which case it gets flushed there and then).  pole still going fantastically well and nearly as good as new.


we've got 4 of them, the youngest being 2.5 yrs old and as you would expect they are all still in excellent shape.

Vince Green - fibreglass used to last us about 6 months per pole, compared to carbon fibre the fibreglass is rubbish - get an slx, you will not be disappointed.

Gardiners - excellent pole, well done.

I found that when using glass fibre pole they would wear out within a year, actually closer to 6 months.  The xtel poles I used to use were not easy to maintain where as the slx can come apart to be cleaned out very easily.  I changed over to the newer clamps sometime ago and they do seem to make the pole last a lot longer.

Although a pole is relatively cheap when you consider the money it will return saving money is always a good thing.  I don't like the idea of using a pole that is on the way out either, a pole that keeps slipping and twisting ect.  So I feel taking the time to maintain it saves me money, not only on a new pole but also on the job as the pole is always reliable.

Doesn't that make your SLX all lubricated and slippery so the clamps won't hold?
