M. o. t. How much do you pay?
« on: March 08, 2011, 05:42:30 am »
Just wondered how much everyone pays for an actual mot. Is it normally one price for the whole of the UK or does it vary quite a lot?
I'm paying £30 tomorrow to have my van done that's at Formula 1 auto centre. It seems to get cheaper every year around here.

I paid £39.50 for the last one.  They normally charge £50+ but had a special offer.  Quite pleased really.  The service, MOT, and a repair set me back £265.

i paid the full whack, £50+ .    my  feeling is that those places doing a m.o.t. discount do it because its a sprat-to-catch-a mackerel , once in they can bump it up by failing your m.o.t. on no end of things.     mine failed only on a track rod end  which was quite reasonable as my vans 11 years old

those auto centres fail cars and vans on non existing faults. i pay £50+ at a garage i can trust. i`ve always done my own maintenance on my own so i know what my vans going to fail on.
And another point on f1 auto centre i brought a car and the last owner had the timing belt done their, got the receipt and everything. i took the timing covers off to check the condition of the belt and could clearly see it was past its best so done it myself.

The £39.50 I paid was to my regular garage that does it normally for £50+.  They have given me reasonable service for a few years now so I do have some trust in them.  They're not the very cheapest but I feel safe that they will do any work properly and that they won't try to rip me off.  I'm always happy to pay a bit more for this.

My van cost 54 quid if i remember rightly and passed(55 plate transit). My car gets it done free for as long as i own the vehicle and its done by a test centre totally independant of the garage i bought it from and has passed without a fault for the past 3 years (05 plates passatt)

i go to a reliable place and its £54, whenever i have taken cars somewhere new they always fail for some reason.

i had a garage 100yards from my house, car fine when it went in, came out with the exhaust mounts broken off.

went to vauxhall once, failed and they couldnt get the back wheel off there and then to fix a loose handbrake cable. so wanted to book it in for £80ph fix.

you may see a bargain price, but its not worth it, they will try to get your money from you.

Although i have never used one as yet, I think the independant test centres have got to be the best places to go. The one that only do mot's. They have nothing to gain by failing your vehicle as they do no do anything else but mot's.
Martin lewis recommends going to a council test station (for their own vehicles) as, again, these have nothing to gain by failing your vehicle for no reason. have a look on http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-mot

Just Mot'S

All they do is M.O.T no bias no alterer motive, just pass or fail.

Good rates if you book on-line, and discount if you book in advance.

I wouldn't let the monkeys at kwik fit adjust my seat, let alone service it.
