Tesco Diesel
« on: December 02, 2010, 07:31:23 pm »
I filled my van with diesel last Friday evening at a local Tesco fuel station (Broadstairs, Kent) and by Tuesday was having a few running problems - lack of power and juddering. Yesterday I took it into the garage and they found that my diesel filter was full of water. Cost me £75 for a new one

Has anyone else had the same problem recently?

No steve and in my case it was red diesel just pointing out that you may??? need to replace the filter again in the near future.

I am beginning to wish I had dumped the remaining half tank of diesel too as I expect the problem to return now.

A new pump is typically £1500 and a grand for a refurb.  :o
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Im not sure how relevant this is but I have heard that supermarket fuel is of a much lower quality than others...... I stopped using it after I was told that.

No Van got some type of warning sensor when to drain. Used tesco for years for the points swapped to total got about another 75miles to the tank every little helps! but thanks for reminding me to change it on next service. Oh I would go back to them but hard to prove!

Buying Diesel can be a bit of a nightmare. I nowadays buy only from what I consider safe places to buy. Along the Monaghan/ Armagh border area and indeed in my own County of Donegal laundering of Diesel is rife where rebated agriculture diesel is ''washed'' to remove the colouring and then sold on to rogue forecourt operators. Pity the poor unsuspecting motorist who fills up with this .

I filled my van with diesel last Friday evening at a local Tesco fuel station (Broadstairs, Kent)

It would be worth lodging 'A question' with Tesco asking if there had been any other complaints? Also contact RAC/AA
It won't be the first time a supermarket has screwed up their fuel supply to the public. There was something on the radio in the summer about Morrisons or maybe Asda having put petrol in the diesil forecourt tanks, which took about 30 vehicles out before the pump was turned off.

Fuel tanks will accumulate condensation, more so when lower fuel levels.
Filters used to have a drain on the bottom to let out any water (oil floats at the top so water is at the bottom).
I would have thought the larger tanks would have had a pump or something at the bottom to do this.
Neglect on the part of the fuel station owner ie Tesco ?????
Worth going back and asking to speak to management, I think.

Never had a problem with tesco's diesel , fill up every week at the one in Beckenham.  Jet fuel is the one i've had problems with for high % of water .

Had a problem with petrol last year (not work) but this caused problems with both my Motorcycle and Lawnmower so the cause seemed obvious.

Managed to sort the lawnmower by stripping down etc but had to have the bike in to shop. Ended up costing best part of £200 and they confirmed the fuel was the issue.

I wrote a letter of complaint to Total, they eventually replied saying after a thorough investigation (checked for other complaints and looked at there test data from the date the fuel was drawn) they considered their fuel was fine and thus not the cause of the problem.

Now, if I hadn't fueled both the bike and lawnmower up from the same jerry can then I'd have thought fair enough, but the fact they both had problems almost immediately after using the fuel was all I needed to convince me. I just wonder how many car owners get this problem but just assume it's a problem with their car.

Needless to say that I wouldn't touch Total's fuel ever again.

I avoid supermarket fuel whenever possible.

Tesco Momentum @ 99 octane is great for about 3 days.

If I put it in my vespa's they wont start after a week.

I always try to use the Premium Shell or BP fuel as we get more miles to each tank.

At home we run Hondas x 3 and they hate supermarket fuel (Petrol & Diesel).
Pinking, lumpy running etc.

It may be cheaper per litre but for less miles and poor performance it aint really worth it.

I've been having problems after filling up with diesel at Tesco in the past fortnight. Lots of crap coming out my exhaust, jerky performance and awful mpg. Never again!

Its all the same fuel, just all goes into massive tanks and all fuel suppliers share it out. Maybe Tesco tank has water leak or snow is melting in, I wouldget an independent test done on fuel
