Spending Today Cackling
« on: November 30, 2010, 05:50:40 am »
Yes that's right i'm spending today cackling like an evil genius because i've cracked the problem of IBC's and RO's freezing up.

My eureka moment came during the night, and was inspired by my other thread where i couldn't figure out how to thaw my transfer hose after leaving it exposed.

I know that i now have a comprehensive answer to nearly all of the probelms associated with prolonged cold weather and will post the defintive answer tonight after my day of cackling.

In the meantime you are welcome to speculate and try and beat me to the punch with my answer or to post deferentislly reqeusting that i explain in more detail. You will need to purchase an oil filled radiator to take advantage of this.

As soon as i've told you the answer i'm sure that many will say that they knew that any way but the fact is that they didn't and don't, and yet again you are going to have to put up with me claiming (yet again) another industry/forum first for the slump.
(i'm busy today, see you tonight)

ha ha ha ha haaa.

Your going on a winter holiday to australia and taking the oil filled rad with you just incase.

I personally keep my oil filled rad in the shed with the ro ibc and transfer hose. The shed is also insulated.

Glad someone has cracked it. Looks like I'm stuck home today,.. my pump froze even with a heater in the van, & now its defrosted it seems to be dead. :(

Personally i emptied my IBC and brought my RO indoors, i had the foresight to mount it via two slings so i could slip it off if neccesary, along with my pre filters. I can still make water if i need to, thats not my problem though. Mine is keeping the van defrosted, although an oil filled rad or calor gas heater would do the job probably. The biggest problem for me though is justifying to customers how all the water i'm dripping about will not freeze. I've decided not to clean until the temps rise, all it does is give me a non stop rush before xmas if i'm lucky enough to get it all in !!
I've decided defrosting is to much hard work, just empty your water out and wait for the thaw ! ;D

Makes me laugh Gav, Andy was runnin round like a headless chicken yesterday defrosting vans, he got out today not sure how long for. My other mate Kev, same dance ,spent yesterday running round buying polysterene, heaters etc.. and he goes out this morning and comes to mine this afternoon to find out why his pumps are on full and there's no water coming out?!!!
Don't get me wrong, i need the money as much as the next man but i aint having any accidents or causing any !!! Just means less booze money at xmas which won't kill me !!!   ;D ;D

Not really that happy with this response.I didn't expect you all to grovel, but i thought you might be a little bit interested, and i can pretty much guess if do tell you you'll say- we knew that.

I though one or two of the bigger boys with units etc might have had some interest. When i think back to some of the nonsence threads about fish tank heaters, and the viability of emersion heaters electrocuting us or not, and all of the really smart practical people (DIY matt etc) who've given this thought and come up with not very much at all.

Well due to lack of interest i'm not going to tell you- attention seeking indeed- when i came up with this i was asleep;it woke me up, and i couldn't get back to sleep again.

Of the sensible replies above an insulated unit and a heater works, and yes to defrost the hose sort of coil it around the radiater that's very close. But it's not the spark of genius i had that changes everything.
