Spots on glass......
« on: November 26, 2010, 08:56:29 pm »
Long boring one this, bear with me !!
Had a mate helping me recently and i check his work(WFP), i noticed spall spots on the glass like he hadn't rinsed it properley. I re rinsed them, pointed it out to him and put it down to his inexperience. Then yesterday i worked on my own and re checking my work i seen these spots again. I rinse the glass and i've got a clear shear finish. As the water runs off and presumabley the layer of water gets thinner these 'spots' materialise. Just a minute speck, but enougth that i can see them if i get the sunlight on them. They dry off fine (i hope!!)
Now my set up......i did have onboard RO and filled directly into tank, pumps push out through DI. I have now changed to a static RO and fill my tank through lay flat hose. My pumps still push out through DI vessels. I guess my wiping of the end of the lay flat is somewhat less than meticulous as i can see very small amounts of debris in my van tank.
Now my question. Has anyone come across this before? Is it like i suspect, just small foreign bodies in my water tank going through my pumps and DI resin and coming out on the glass? Or, as a mate of mine suggested it may be down to my DI resin being spent or something in the DI housing not seated right? I havn't bothered renewing my DI for about 3 months or more as my RO now produces water around 5 PPM. Any ideas?

Had the 'spotted' windows been cleaned previously with wfp and were fine?

Yeah, all long term jobs of mine, been done WFP for ages. These spots where not spots that dried into spot(if you know what i mean), they just looked liked someone had thrown a single grain of sand onto a window? That make sense?

sometimes resin can get pushed out the vessel, it falls of the window when dry though

Not white water spots then? If it looks like there are loads of tiny pieces of sand on the window when its wet then this is quite common and they won't show when dry. I get it all the time and you certainly won't see it from inside out.

I've never seen it before though.I never had it before so i'm guessing something has changed, just trying to eliminate what it is? Or as you say, maybe its always been like that and i'm noticing it as i'm being probably overcritical checking his work.

I think thats the case. If you stand and watch the water run of,when it gets 'thinner' you will notice the spots. Trust yourself!

If it's the blue lay flat hose then you need to run water through it for a few seconds before putting it into the tank.

I noticed it when I put the transfer pump on then left it a couple of minutes before I switched on the nozzle at the other end, so it was under pressure in the layflat bit for longer than normal.  The water came out VERY foamy.  Could be that that isn't helping.

You're right, of course.

OK.  Here's another possibility.  Here's a pic of two glasses of water.  Both had a  TDS of zero, but you wouldn't be wanting to clean your customers' windows with one of them.  It was a suspension of rust from the cast iron impeller on a brand new pump.  As it's not made up of ions, it'd pass straight through a DI vessel.

Have you changed pumps or any other kit recently?  Try putting a sample into a very clean glass and just taking a look to see if something's in suspension in there.
