How do i pay my new leaflet man?
« on: September 20, 2005, 05:23:18 pm »
Hi guys,

I have just taken on a leaflet distributer and dont want to upset the tax man, from my understanding you cannot be self employed if you do all you work for one person. I don't want to go down the PAYE  and employer contribution road, so was thinking about where sub contracting might fit in.

Yours confused,

ben

Ian, he is here for the forseable future and yes he does have another job(5 hours per evening), he could deliver other leaflets but would be pushing it a bit.

Hes happy to be self emplyed but i think its more to do with the tax benefits than anything else.

he collected 2000 today so hopefully i won't see them fluttering past my driveway later on. ;D

Pay him either cash in hand or get him to invoice you.  This is unlikely to be a permanent position and providing he is not fully employed by you (40 hrs/week) and has the "opportunity" to earn a living from other people (whether he actually does or not) then this should pose no problem to the tax man and they will see him as being a self employed leaflet distributor.

I use someone on exactly the same basis and get  a monthly invoice for his services

Hi Ben

Is your leaflet person delivering all 5000 by himself over the week? I reckon thats around 7 hours a day of walking. If so, how has the first week gone? Is he still alive!

Ian,

progress with my own distributer is pretty good so far, shes honest and keen.

She did 16.5 hours this week and delivered 2091 leaflets. So far 6 calls, 4 quotes, 3 bookings. Not a bad return but still costs £57 per thousand (including cost of leaflets)

The other company started delivering 10k today--no calls as yet.

Ben,

Ypu are getting the calls and the bookings

Although early days you need to work out your presentation to qoutes ratio amd if you think it could be improved. Its what you are happy with.

Then work out your sales in relation to spend is it say for every pound spent  a four pound return.

If not  how much would you need to put prices up.

Also you will get a drible from leaflrts out for a few more weeks.

Plus improved results as you repeat area regularly.

Hi Guys

My experance with leaflets is a strange one!

If I get some kids to drop  1,000 on a sat morning I get the same results as when i get the local paper to drop 5,000

I can only think that when the kids drop them, first its at morning so pepole have more time to read it, and also it on the door mat on its own. When the paper drops the 5,000 it goes inside the paper with all the others and goes out on a thursday or friday night.when people are getting in from work and have little interest.

Respect

Ian Harper

Ian,

On the other hand I get get out 5000 with local paper  for a £100  on a regular contract

5000 solus  at least £250 with all the problems that go with finding reliable people to ensure regular results/

So at end of day it comes down to ratio of marketing costs to sales.

Not how many leaflets calls per thousand etc.

That said I prefer Solus where possible

I don't count the leaflets, but the distributer counts properties she's delivered too and highlights the streets done.
I feel my conversion rate could be improved but i am sticking to my prices at present and this may be the cause of a few lost jobs. I am working on my presentation and will be building up a folder and possibly some laptop footage to improve things.
