How long for gutters to get dirty?
« on: August 21, 2010, 08:40:50 am »
I understand there's an element of "How long is a piece of string" to this question, but how long does it take gutters to get dirty?

So, if a house was on a quiet road and had white gutters, would they get back to being filthy every year, two years, three years, etc.

The reason for the question?  I'm think of offering a price for a first gutter clean for £x per metre, then suggesting that if they want it done annually it'll be £y per metre, and every other year for £z per metre.   If they do get back to being filthy after a year, then there's no point offering this type of pricing, as I'd be shooting myself in the foot.  Similarly, if after a year they'll look fine, then the customer's not going to want them doing.

So, you know the reason for the question and I know there's a lot of guesswork in the answer, but I'd appreciate your opinions.

I should have been clearer in my wording.

I meant, do the first clean at price £x then offer future annual cleans at £y for the reason you highlight.  My mistake.

So, can anyone give me a clue as to the answer on how long they take to get dirty again?

do what i do offer a monthly service for something like £5/10 more a month and basically look after the gutters make sure they are kept clean all year,  that way the custy just leaves it to u and to be honest it might take you an extra 20 mins every 8 months just to scrub the out side of the gutters

Like the idea of the regular maintenance, might give it a try.

In the meantime, andone any view on the original question?

vin, we hardly ever do a repeat facia/gutter clean, I find they take ages to go back to needing it again, of the extras we do this service is lower on the popular list, top 2 are conservatory roof, (I think you need to come down on the price a bit to get more) you know what we charge and I find were in the money at that rate and we get alot of them. and of course clearing out the gutters, you can get most people to have that once a year.
The best way to predict the future is to create it.

I have a customer who rings me up every 3 to 4 months to have his gutters fascia's and soffits and windows cleaned. And he has not got any over hanging trees at front or at back.

I do a lot of gutter cleaning & most want it done every 2nd year. about 30% are annual, but most of these are surrounded by trees etc so they do get dirty quicker.
