undercut what would you do?
« on: August 18, 2010, 12:31:57 am »
met a windy the other day working opposite me, tried to be friendly to him, but he was in his mid 50's and apparently 20 yrs experience, and didnt like the fact that i was young, nice van, more clued up, etc, was quite rude, but thought maybe he would come around once he got to know me, left thinking he was a plonker, but thought nothing of it.

he went on at a later date to knock at my customers, and complain about me and other newbies (im 3 yrs old btw) putting him and the other oldies out of business! and whatever i was charging, he would do it for less. she told him to sling his hook, and wasnt impressed with his underhand ways. he called back again, hoping to speak to the husband, but was told again to get lost.

im thankful for their loyalty, as a lot of my customers have gone to undercutters.

but what do i do now? shall i knock at his customers, and do the same to him? i will most probably have to take a paycut as he obviously isnt charging enough, but i think even if i do it for free, the pleasure will be enough!

hes not on the internet, so i cant confront him, and ive only seen him about a couple of times! what would you do?

hes scared of losing custy to you, so he hopes by undercutting you, you move on

you have 2 options

1  nick his custys

2  sod him, ignore him and when u see him shout hi and wave

i am going to take a long shot here, i would say he is trad and reakons wfp is crap and slags it off all the time

i would take him to one side and have a word with him.thats the last he would go knocking on my customers doors thats for sure!ive not lost any to undercutters(probably cos im fair with my pricing and do a good job most of the time! :P).ive also been going 16 years(im 38 now).

DO NOT go knocking his custies and start playing childish games with him!just have a word man to man.

The guy is very insecure. Dust your self down and above all don't drop to his standards. What comes around goes around. I bet you any money you like he has no insurance and is a cheating window cleaner claiming as many benefits as possible.

I would take his vehicle number and report him on the benefits hotline and to the income tax people.

Chances are he probably is a slag. Rattle his cage a bit, he started it.

Its amazing how people get tarnished with a brush on here...lol...

He had the nuts to knock on a customers door and beat a price so he must be a benefit cheat...lol

I don't agree with what he's done but come on don't you think that maybe you might jumping to a conclusion here ;)

What does it matter? If he's not slagging he has nothing to fear from the benefits people or the taxman.
But anyone who knocked on my customer and offered to do it for less after seeing me clean the windows would have made an enemy - big time. This is unacceptable behaviour.

I would ignore him; I would make sure I was happy I was charging a sensible price and not creaming it and I would carry on.

I would be very tempted to wave at him and smile when I saw him too.

It's not Stan the Man is it?  ;D

It doesn't matter.

But everytime i read someone say 'i've been undercut' or 'i see a man walking with his ladder' he is always a benefit cheat ;D

If you want to look for Benefit cheats then the smart ones probably have a hell of a lot of houses that have no-one living in them and the government paying the mortgage.

It wouldn't be me as i'm not crafty enough to twist the system like that :-X 8) no seriously it wasn't me! :P

What window cleaners need is a code of practice, and undercutting should be classed as a health and Safety issue as some one undercutting could get seriously injured. ;)

i think if i ever see him again, i will ask him why he did it. (watch him squirm) and then ask him if he would like me to do it to him every time i see him cleaning a house. see what he says to that.

btw hes the guy who only uses resin and a 250 ltr tank as he thinks he will save money on fuel bills rather than lugging a 650 ltr tank around! forget the fact he spends £70 a month on resin! he also fills up at custs homes, im sure they will be happy if theyre on a meter!

warn your customers and have a 'word' with him next time you see him. Tell him that he's wasting his time anyway because all your customers have been warned and suggest to him that he might like to get off his ass and find his own customers rather than pinching someone elses.

next time you are out and you see him phone the police and say you have seen some bloke trying the backgates in the road and going around the back of the houses,

he could be a burgler
