phobic windows wfping
« on: August 15, 2010, 10:38:05 pm »
HI ALL
OVER 60% OF WINDOWS I CLEAN ON HOUSES ARE PHOBIC - IF I WAS TO BLADE THEM ALL OFF IT WOULD TAKE QUITE A BIT OF EXTRA TIME - PARTICULARLY ON 1ST FLOOR WINDOWS AND AROUND A CONSERVATORY.

DO YOU GUYS BLADE THEM ALL OFF? AND IS IT FAIR TO SAY THAT ALL PHOBIC WINDOWS WILL SPOT IF YOU DONT BLADE THEM OFF?

I DO HAVE THE ODD SPOTTING AND CORRECT IF I NOTICE OR CUSTY FLAGS IT TO ME - MY TDS METRE READINGS ARE ZERO HAD THE ODD TIME WHERE ITS .001

ALSO HAD A TOP SMALL OPENER RECENTLY THAT I RE-DONE TWICE WITH WFP AND IT STILL LEFT SPOTTING - I DO THE TOPS OF THE FRAME AS WELL AND SCRUB ABND RINSE MORE THAN I PROBABLY SHOULD AS WELL SO WONDERING WHETHER I SHOULD BLADE EVERY TIME?

ANYONE ?

BEST REGARDS MARK (NEWBIE ON A LEARNING CURVE)

If you are going to blade them you may as well clean them traditionally!
Hydrophobic window shouldn't spot more than Hydrophilic. its down to technique.
Try rinsing with brush on.

Don't blade wfp you're wasting your time. Just take extra care on those problem windows that tend to trickle from the seals. If you're blading them anyway you might as well just do them trad.

I have the odd window on my round that just cannot be done wfp because the results are awful even after about 5 cleans so I trad them, but most windows after a couple of cleans (if not straight away most of the time) will be perfect with wfp.

You'll eventually get to know which windows you can fly round and which ones you need to take extra care on

Hi Richard, water on hydrophobic glass will bead where as water on hydrophilic glass will shear down the pane.
The reason behind it happens to be when the glass is made, one is produced under lower temperatures than the other, but I am not sure which way round it is.

Richard your welcome, I personally think its in the mind, becuase we see that the water beads and instantly think it won't rinse properly.
Do you use a flow controller? ifso what do you have it set at?

sounds stupid but are they spotting or going dirty, as you get a lot of custy who come out when u go and wipe the windows with a cloth and then say the windows aint clean as they then go spot as they are absorbing dirt of the cloths, and you come back and all you see is the spots

i scrub and rinse like hell and its only odd windows

my setting on flow controller is 14 the jet comes out about 12-15inch - i know a guy who has 24 but when i have mine on 24 it comes out about 9 feet lol hence i lowered to 14 matt, what do you yhink should notch it up?

its a pure freedom van mount with the flow controller in van.

2 of the guys who are asking are new to water fed pole and wants to know how to prevent spotting.
one of them thought it could be because the window beads (hydrophobic) and I told them basically that the beading window rinse just as good as the windows that shear (hydrophilic).
Its not over thinking Form b, just an explanation!

that's right windows that bead come up as good as windows that sheet, If you are getting spotting then something else is causing it...

The reason that most window cleaners like windows that sheet is because it is less likely to mark as the water is not staying at the top of the frame to pick up contamination...

We are working on a video that shows the problems about spotting and giving some tips on how to help, Video will be ready soon Promise  ;D

I have never even heard the term hydrophobic before.

It all sounds a bit daft to me.

Are you trying to tell me that the glass is phobic of water?

Some windows bubble some sheet. It makes little or no difference to the end result.

You are over thinking it.

Hi Matt

I'm not trying to contradict or disagree with what you've said, but I thought that hydrophobic glass was glass that has had a coating put on it to help the prevention of dirt build up etc

I have a theory that when glass is made one side is formed against a sheet of zinc and the top is formed open to the air. The one side will have a different charge one - and one + The repelling water and one loving and attracting water.
When the double glazing is laid up sometimes the sheets of glass are on different side up hence some repel water and some sheet.
I have heard many understandings of why this happens. but this theory of mine holds true to many sciencetific  fact.
