Andy,

It's not the way it works. You are not introducing a negative, you are giving them a very strong positive.

Most of my friends run businesses in a variety of markets.

They all have it in place and many times apparently, it has been the difference between getting a sale and not.

When asked why they chose them, the customer mentioned the guarrantee. They said the competing companies said they never make mistakes but their (the customers') approach was that "there is a first time for everything". At least the guarantee gave them piece of mind.

We all know some stains just wont move, or only become paler. If the custy not happy the stain thats been there for 5 years has not shifted - do you give the money back for the whole clean - even tho the rest of the carpet has come up well?

The thing is Joe we are not there to remove stains, we are there to clean the carpet, stains are something else.
I always explain, once my attention is brought to the presence of stains, that if the stain is a result of something containing a colour, then the carpet fibres may have accepted that new colour and the carpet may have been locally redyed. I then tell them it may improve and the carpet will be clean, however the chances are, some discoloration will remain.
