im sure its been on her before and ive always thought i cant be assed with the paperwork but now im finding that with big companies like toys r us, boots ...... all going regional with window cleaners - im getting window cleaning companies phoning up for me to do jobs in my area, but they all want a safe scheme ..........

thinking due the costs - whats the point in it just to do a few jobs which would only cover the safety scheme???

any advice welcome....

cheers

We were part of it for 3 years and gained not a single job through it, infact the whole set up is a farce.
On the paperwork side of things, each year our submission was returned with more detail needed. Strange that nothing changed in our business over those years so why was last years paperwork ok but not this year???????
One example of why it doesn't work. Lloyds TSB are mentioned as being SC which means they should use SC people to do work on their buildings yet I kept seeing window cleaners who CLEARLY didn't have a clue about safety cleaning their windows. This was probably because the main contractor would have been SC but by the time it fed down the chain to the end user it didn't matter one way or the other.
We approached some big names on the SC register about getting on their books only to be told they had never heard of SC......

schemes like safecontractor are everywhere now, we are accredited and in all fairness it does have its good points in that it ensures your paperwork for safety requirements is adequate and it also helps make your firm look more proffessional, the downside is because there are loads of similar schemes different contracts require you to be accredited to their own chosen scheme so you end up sending your paperwork to each to be accredited and have the priveledge of paying between £300 and £600 a year to each one you join the latest one we are having to join to be able to tender for the job is construction line.
i know it will never happen but surely there should be one scheme the federation could set up that would be interlinked to all these schemes so if your paperwork meets the one requirement then your accredited to all schemes, i also think these schemes focus to much on the paperwork side and dont follow up to check how the firms who are members are following the tasks practically i believe they should do spot checks and remove contractors who arent implementig the standards they claim to be adhering to in their paperwork.
