Better gutter cleaning brush?
« on: March 28, 2010, 10:34:57 am »
I want a superlight, long lasting brush with a vikan thread - same as my Gardiners Superlight really but with longer bristles to get up behind the gutters. Any suggestions?

Did a full clean yesterday and I'm beginning to think ladders are the future  :o
Shoulders ache today, my sides ache, my neck aches.
The gutter vac, generator and all the gubbings seem so over the top for residential work and probably physically harder.  :-\

why dont you cut down a vikan, I know Matt (diy) shaved loads off of the stock.
Gutter cleaning is harder with the vac but at the same time is safer and most parts quicker

I've been using a normal "floor" brush with the longest bristles I could find "about 1/3 longer again than a gardiners one" I then cut the edges down so the head is only 4 1/2" long, i then screwed a single fan jet to the top.
I spray tfr all over then use this brush which easily gets in all the gutter brackets, then use my normal brush to do the complete lengths.
This cut down brush saves struggling with the full size one to get into the brackets, behind gutters etc.
Works for me anyway :)

The top picture is my lobby brush. The lower picture is a regular brush.

The technique is almost identical to what john tomkins describes above.

Mmm looks like a 'brush fondling' day for me then. I like the Vikan bristles best but they are too short. Need a brush that lasts and lasts.

If Alex produced one I'd probably spend the money for a good'un.

What's a lobby brush? Not heard of that before.

Wally, have you cut that lobby brush down or is that the size they come at?
Looks decent anyway, where did you buy it, looks longer bristles than my one?

No. Not cut it down at all. It did have a white plastic cover, but that broke. The thread on it is the regular British broom thread, so it doesn't fit perfectly on the adapter, but it hasn't come off yet. I think that a self-tapper might be a good idea to hold it on a bit more securely.

As you can see, the bristles are about 5 inches long. What you can't see is that they are very densely packed. There's quite a lot of scrubbing power in there.

(I can also use it on conservatory ridge cappings. Then I use it with a sort of stabbing motion to get into all the tiniest nooks and crannies and it really shifts the algae and muck.)

It wasn't cheap. It was about £16 from B&Q many years ago.

It has earned its place in my toolkit.

Just get a decent petrol pressure washer with extendable lance....much better and quicker. ;)

BnQ SELL a lobby brush ,  i bought one recently .  it has a bright green handle and a bright green  cover over the brush head, once you slide this cover off is the brush head, long bristles and a great tool .  it has a regular brush thread

I actually caught myself doing this in Tesco today. Had to give myself a good talking to.
