just a quick question.
is a pump controller 100% needed?
is it safe to run a pump without one and just a trigger on the microbore and does anyone do this?

also is there a cheap controller available as most seem to be £80+

No, not entirely necessary. I do use a valve on the hose leading to the inlet side of the pump. It just limits the amount of water that goes into the pump.

In one van i have a 60psi shurflo with no controller and that is fine. In my other van i have a 100psi pump and that is too much water pumped without a controller,unless u have a tap on your hose or brush to control the flow,however,this doesn't stop the pump running at full bore. A direct answer would be that it depends what pump you use.

My own experience is that I kept on blowing fuses when I tried running without a controller. The pressure switch cycled on and off so rapidly that the motor was drawing a start-up current nearly all the time.

I know the controllers are expensive, but I'd say, yes, it is necessary to have one.

Limiting the amount of water that goes into the pump stops the pump from cycling.

Could you not place a split to the pole and bypass after the pump back into the tank with a ball valve.

I have done that, but the pump continues to run. With a valve on the inlet side of the pump, the pressure switch will turn the pump off when not needed.
