transfer pump to fit in ibc
« on: February 21, 2010, 05:46:58 pm »
i'm after a transfer pump, its to fill  20 litre barrels from  a 1000l ibc, so doesn't need to be super fast, (get v bored waiting for gravity to do it!) The ibc has a 6inch hole in top, has anyone got or know of a pump that drops straight in as I'd rather not be cutting up the ibc. any links would be great.

Cheers,

Neil

PS have tried search function but cant get a definitive answer!!

I use one of these to transfer from ibc to my van:

They also do ones you can drop in the ibc i think but I've never tried one.

Neil,

This is a problem we had when we were setting up WFP, you've got 4 choices that I know of

1. A bore hole pump (quite expensive)

2. A non submersible pump sat outside of the IBC

3. Cut a larger openning on the IBC

4. The one we opted for - buy a IBC with an 8" opening

Regards

Al

When I had an ibc I was lucky enough to pick up one that had a larger lid, but a guy that I did a work for picked up two that had smaller lids.
All we did with his was make two cuts in the top of the tank, one either side of the opening (approx 5-6 inches).
Then all we had to do was push the submersible pump through, did take a little bit of effort, plus I scuffed my knuckles, but we got it in.
Then all he had to do was make a hole in the lid for the pipe and tape up the cuts that we had made.
The pump just stays in there all the time.

Hi,

It comes with 2 wires out of the unit.
I connected a length of 2 core auto cable to it and then to the respctive terminals of leisure battery in back of van
If you are good, you can use a connection to ciggy lighter.
You will need to buy a length of tubing sufficient to link IBC and containers.

Check Yellow Pages for marine suppliers etc.
If you cant find one, give me your email address and I can give you info of where I bought mine.

Another point!

You will need a torpedo type on/off switch to switch off the pump when your containers are close to being filled up.

I think that what I'm really after then is a similar sized and specked pump, that runs of a normal plug (As I'm tranfererring water in my garage rather than in a van) so i wont need a leisure battery or special on/off switch. the search continues!  ::)

Go to machine mart, they have loads of pump out, so you can have a look and see which one will fit. ;D

I have two of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-35463-Submersible-Water-Pump/dp/B0001K9TDI

They even have a bracket on the side to fix the float switch in the 'on' position so you can control the pump with a simple 'on-off' switch in the power line.

Cutting a slot in the top of the IBC is perfectly OK - just seal it up with gaffer tape afterwards.

Mine are both several years old and have been totally reliable.
