any probs with your split charge
« on: December 27, 2009, 10:32:24 pm »
iv always had little problems with my batterys and never been quite sure what the problem was but iv always had a feeling it was the split charge for some reason. I would go out to the van some mornings and it wouldnt start dead battery never once happened before the relay was fitted. i would then stick it on the charge after about five minutes it says its fine and starts no problem. that maybe happened once every couple of months then the second battery for the wfp started to fade near the end of the day so i would have to start the van a few times while working to get enough power to work slowly but surely im having to start the van a bit earlier every week. then today i went out to the van and it wouldnt start was working fine yesterday when i stuck the charger on it showed the battery was completly dead then stuck it on the wfp battery and it was completly dead dont understand this as the wfp hasnt been used in over a week so i started to wonder about the relay so i disconected the relay from the van battery all of a sudden theres life in the battery i connected it back up to the van and it started first time whats that all about. Im now thinking i should buy two 140amp batterys for the wfp while one is being used the other is in the house on the trickle charge and just swap these over every day or every other day and not even use the split charge.
Thanks for reading could i hear your thoughts and has anyone had any problems with their relay and do you think a 140amp battery would last a whole day without a relay for a two man set up running two 100psi pumps  i would say around six hrs running time per day

I think that you might find that an auto electrician is the right person to ask about this.

As we only travel a short distance to work the leisure batteries in both vans need to be topped up every few days.

We started to have starting problem on the small van at the beginning of this winter and ended up replacing the van battery which has cured that problem. However, the leisure battery still needs to be regularily charged as it will go completely flat if its left.

You could have a mixture of many problems here. Maybe the van battery is a little dodgy and the leisure battery needs a good charging. If the alternator is spending all of its time trying to charge a faulty van battery then there is going to be less left to charge the leisure battery.
Or perhaps the alternator is not charging properly, or perhaps both van and leisure batteries need replacing. Hence my suggestion to get the problem checked out by someone who knows.

Hope this helps.
