Totally agree, spoke to another wc the other day and he told me a mate of his cleaned a few years back, custy slipped on ice due to water freezing on floor and he was taken to court and lost had to pay custy £15,000 plus costs, insurance wouldnt pay out as it was down to stupidity of working in minus conditions and putting salt down proved more so as he new of the dangers  :o

Probably just hearsay ::)
I'd like more proof as to if it was true though.

The person who it happened too is a local guy, why would it be hear say, trust me it wouldnt be difficult to cause a slip hazard and custy to fall on it, especially those who pole shop fronts and around the front door  ;)

its very likely going to happen more and more, my dealings with "no-win , no-fee solicitors" have been a real eye opener

lets face it, its just dangerous to do, we all know the water will freeze, water will take ages to dry in this weather and when the sun
What happened to the customer ? goes down and the temps drop, it'll just turn to ice
if the ground is already wet that cant prove jack, if you put salt down that is to save people, I do agree if there is ice all over the place and you wfp every thing your asking for trouble, trading a door or leaving it due to hazard is better. I somehow think there is a lot more to this story as there normally is.

the thing is, thats not going to help you with a solicitor claiming that you quirted water on the window, it ran down the wall and made the floor wet

you have got the floor wet ( or even wetter )  when asked that in court, you will have to admit it

i have the risk of freezing weather included on my risk assessments stating no wfp work will take place during freezing temperatures as it would cause a major slip hazzard.
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt

I said hearsay because these things always happen to a friend of a friend.
If it was really as bad as you were told then there would be local news stories/papers etc, please provide any links.
I know it would be easy for it to happen I'm just saying "how the hell can they convict you"
So links to the offence would be nice.

so your not working this week Trevor, did you not work last week either ? I would hate your wage bill and not work, or do you trad and risk being sued for not using wfp. seems a lose lose situation.

as you know i do quite a lot of commercial work for weeks like this i try and do as many inside jobs as possible, any areas upto 6m high that are on paths or pavements are done by ladderrs that are being footed any areas where the water will drip onto soil or grass are done by wfp as usual as this doesnt cause a slip hazzard.
it is only the occasional day that temperatures stay below freezing point beyond 9am and before 4pm so for the majority of this time it is wfp as usual.

Phew I was worried I was doing something alien there, I work all the time only when water could turn to ice will I stop, I would then trad.

Cheers for the reply Trevor  ;)

one housing association i clean the warden has been told not to spread salt on pathways anymore because if she happens to miss a bit and a resident was to slip on area missed then they could be sued as they have taken responsibility for the area by spreading the salt in the first place this just shows the mockery of some H and S issues.
it would be interesting for the federation to look a bit further into how we stand on this issue of whether throwing salt down covers us sufficiently though

I would be interested on there take on it, I put down salt to help prevent ice forming even when it may not be needed. Maybe I should save myself a few pennies, h&s annoys me quite a lot at the mo, as everytime I get somewhere I am bogged down with another stupid rule or 2  :(

This is true, we maintain whole estates (commercial and residential ) and we have had to stop gritting/salting, for the same reason. madness !!!

Hi
Surely the same principles apply to the council gritting our roads then?
