SLX sections
« on: December 12, 2009, 04:49:15 pm »
I am starting to expect a snapped section from my 9 month old slx. There is alot of flex in the top two sections now and alot of wear. How much are replacement sections, I have checked the website and I cannot find replacement sections for the SLX.

I have to admit I am not a happy camper with the rate of wear but still wouldn't go back to glass fibre. I do look after it and if it gets gritty I rinse out the sections and I always run the pole hose through a cloth every time it is returned to the van.

Any ideas on section costs?

Since the heavy rain, i find any block paving seems to have a lot of sand around where the rain has washed it out, this has caused me a lot of down time!
Also on new developments the block paving has sand everywhere!

Mr B
If in doubt.....Leave it out !!

I have a mark 1 pole from the first batch, and a couple of the new ones with the newest clamps. I have not had any problems with the clamps or sections on the mark 1, but we have had a few problems with the new ones with the clamps and the wear on the sections. BUT, to be fair, Gardiners have been on the ball with the issues each and every time there has been a problem. IMO the first batch of poles are better, i think the carbon is better quality (think it was what they used to make rota blades for helicopters)  and i actually prefer the clamps. If my pole gave up i would still probably buy a new version for myself, just because the customer service at Gardiners is second to none!

What do you mean better quality carbon on the first SL-X?

Are the current SL-X poles different from the very first pole batch? There a window cleaners who had the very first SL-X pole, they have put up post saying there pole’s are still are working fine with little wear compared to the latest batch.

What’s the difference?

The carbon weave (i think they call it) is different. Imo, I did not think there was anything wrong with the original pole, it is light, clamps are very robust ect and i have not had any problems with it at all. But the usual happens, i don't like this Alex, i don't like that Alex, can you change this Alex, can you change that Alex, how about this Alex, be better if it was lighter Alex. So we are now on the 3rd version of the SLX, with an upgrade on the clamps that have been sent out. Now all i see on here is, clamps are no good, sections wearing, ect ect. If it isn't broke and all that! The guys that work for me love the new poles by the way, prefer them to the hybrid X-Tels, they haven't had too many problems, apart from the clamps which have now been changed, and the carbon bleeding a bit. But they do look after the poles, and they do hose them through at the end of each night,  i have said to them, if they break they will go back to the xtel.  ;D

Just to add, the original is a 25ft, and the new ones are 30ft. Don't know if that makes any difference.

You ever get caught out with the 25 over the 30?

I was going to go with the 22, so glad they sold out and I didnt.

I thought all carbon, no matter what the product is, had a weave? The weave is different on my old pole, compared to the new ones.

You are joking you plum. He said a different carbon weave on the last lot to the first lot, with his impression being that the former was better than the latter.

No i find that i can reach most of my jobs with the 25ft. It can reach some low 4th stories that i have, but i have to be standing very close to the building and arms out fully. The 30ft poles are perfect for everyday use, well for our jobs, and they are smaller closed than my old 25ft. Anything higher, we have a 60ft superlight.

No not all carbon fibre, Facelift have carbon fibre tape finished off with a thin transfer wrapped around the pole sections with a carbon fibre weave pattern.

Ironic that it’s a carbon fibre pole with a sticker wrapped around it to make it look like carbon fibre.

How are the Gardener’s new poles made with the tape or with the weave?

Oh right, i did not know that? I will have a look on Monday.

carbons grown, and presumably to add strength onto some kind of weave, just as laquer is applied to a weave for fibreglass. I think it's strong in compression but not the other way, hence easy to break if you try to bang a window shut.

the superlite is no doubt 100% carbon, unbelevably  lite, anything in between should be termed hybride, or they are scamming us
