Internet Banking

For those of you guys that already use this system, a few questions......

Is it as simple as leaving the customer with a "windows cleaned" slip with my account number and sort code on it and they can simply pay it ?

Are there any security issues with the "wrong" people getting hold of my bank details?

How do you "track" payments, does the customer have a reference number or do they just use their Surname and how does it show up on your bank staement?

I'm tempted to give this a go....has anyone tried it and not got on with it?

Cheers

Dave

Dave, we use online banking for a few of our brit custies, alot of Germans use it too. It's not a problem giving out your bank details in this case, as transfers can only be made using your code numbers from a "TAN" list you get from secure mail from your bank. I assume it's the same system in UK.

We have the custy state their name or street and number plus name. Lots of ways of tracking, it's up to you. It is secure here, so I assume some of the guys will tell you more about it when they come online this evening. Didn't want you getting bored waiting lol :)

Since I started in Oct 06 I have had all but 6 of my customers pay via internet banking...upon each clean they are given a card with various bits of info on including my bank account numbers & sort code...

When they pay they all put their postcode and house number in the reference field.

I have yet to have a problem with this method...

Cheers
Dave.

I have been using this method for ages with no problems. All the customer needs is your sort code and account number, when they go online to pay or into their branch they either tell the cashier what reference to use, (I ask for address) or in the case of online there is a field for them to fill in.
The one thing I would advice though is to use a separate account just for this purpose. It has nothing to do with security as no one can do anything other than put money into your account with just your sort code and account number but having a separate account makes keeping track so much easier, otherwise when you get like me and have dozens of transactions a week it get complicated if they are mixed in with your day to day banking.
I just go down the list once a week and check off who has paid then transfer to the main account. Simple!

I also ask the custie to supply a reference number  <housenumber><postcode> OR <first 3 letters of housename><postcode>  .  Beware of using anAbbey business account as they don't usually supply this reference number to the recipient (you).  Quite how they expect you to know who has paid is beyond me.  On a smallish round you can usually figure it out as custie name and the amoount both show up.  However, sometimes that may not be enough (e.g. 2 Jones's each owing you £15).
I've now ditched Abbey for all but a very tiny bit of my business banking.
It's free up to certain limits.  That's about all it's worth too.
