Homebase - window cleaning supplies
« on: October 15, 2009, 08:01:25 am »
Went into our local Homebase yesterday to use the loo. While I was there I had a little wander round to get some bits. I found a little window cleaning display that I had never seen before. Not much selection, all Unger, and quite dear but its handy to know.

Could be wrong, but most of it looks like it's meant for the domestic home owner, for ocasional use and not the riggers of every day use by a window cleaner.

Yes I agree but its handy to know where to get some supplies if you run out without having to pay postage. I use the Unger Liquid now and they sell that, the occasional rubber perhaps.

Homebase is not cheap for a lot of things.

I have never understood how Homebase is still trading.
I can go into any B&Q and it will be busy,no matter what time of day it is,yet we have two Homebases around our area and it allways seems there is nobody in them.Their prices are well over the top on the majority of stuff as well.

I've been to Homebase today and looked at the Unger gear, not as good quality as the green brand, the blue brand seem to be less quality and cheaper made ,the rubbers on the squeegees were awful, the only good thing there was the Unger liquid and maybe the bucket :D

Alright mate, have you tried the rubber from Homebase?? I'm currently using the Screwfix version which is the same i think?? I'm struggling with my squeegee but though it was just me being a novice! Is their really that much difference between between the products? Anyone else had experience of the unger blue range then upgraded to the premium products???

You will be very suprised at the difference in quality and results,I had tried the older screwfix ones as a local butchers I do did his own windows before getting me,he had the screwfix brand behind the counter and I used it and am glad I stuck with Unger but maybe they have improved since then, today however I thought the rubbers on the blue Unger brand felt very flimsey and cheap,I could be wrong but I know a quality rubber when I feel it ;D

It's the only stuff i've used as i'm quite new to window cleaning. Been meaning to order some ergotec stuff or perhaps ettore but have just been plodding on with the cheaper unger at the moment as i can get it off the shelf locally, plus i thought it would be ok for everyday use. I have noticed though that the more i use it the more i think its not very good. I've been spending way too much time detailing as i'm left with streaks, water runs and trail lines. Very frustrating >:(

Seems as though the trusted brands put inferior products for everyday use out in the likes of homebase and B&Q then? I though because it was unger i brought, it would be ok. So i definitely need to start using the better products then??

I was doubting my ability but i don't think these products are helping me at all. Gonna place an online order and get some proper stuff for the job. If i'm ok with the stuff i'm currently using then i should be pretty good with the proper kit ;D

Hi,

Very inferior to the professional brand.  I had the combination scrubber squeegee under the sink for the wife to use. The squeegee part makes window cleaning hard work. I Chucked it out last week.

Thanx People who replied on this subject, gonna go and order some proper bits now. I'll report back once i've used my new kit with the differences in quality, so others don't go and buy stuff from homebase and B&Q to start window cleaning properly :D :D ;)

Hi i bought all my window cleaning gear from screwfix a couple of years ago it's unger and i only do a few wc jobs but it has served me well. But i have noticed in the newer screwfix book the gear does look cheaper than the stuff i bought perhaps unger are making more inferior gear now but it's still around the same price.

i get most of my gear from the windowclean centre online.theyve been v.good and quick with delivery.i use nearly all unger stuff, trad poles,pouches,scrim,b.o.b,squeegys etc.i find them great for professional window cleaning.i wouldnt bother with the homebase stuff as its targeted at housewifes and the like.NOT for day in/day out TRAD cleaning.and dont buy b and q domestic ladders!trade ladders 2 section 3.5 metre ones u want for general domestic work.any higher i get the trad pole out!
price higher/work harder!
