 :(  :(  :(

I think it was last friday when it happened, it was the coldest night, and I think it went down to -5.

I just put my new fan heater in the van, and didn't realise that the minimum frost setting is either way too low, or off. I had a thick blanket on my 4040, but saw the next morning the prefilters were frozen.

Yesterday I started to fill the tank, saw that the TDS out of the membrane was 69ppm (in ~235ppm), I thought, lets hope it's the prefilters, but it wasn't. I changed the prefilters and the actual TDS started slowly creeping up, it's around 73ppm now.

So there you have it. I can't stress enough how important it is to keep it frost free. One mistake and it could set you back £200 or more.

out of interest, was the 4040 still hooked up to water or did you have everything open ended? got me worried now!

don't give up on it yet.
My ro froze sunday. Was full of green gunk as well. (Dunno where that came from as the filters were clear before.)
Monday i cleared it all and the tds was 230. After hours of flushing it eventually went down to 18. Normally 7.
I ran it on production overnight monday and yesterday morning it was producing water around 4 or 5 after the ro.

The 4040 is van mounted, and wasn't hooked up to the watersupply. My van does have stop connectors on the van port for filling, so it's safe to assume the tubes were full of water.

I have flushed it for about 20min. I will try and flush it some more today.

Hmm, lets hope so, not gonna give up just yet. I'm going out to do a couple of jobs today, and then I will fill the tank back up and see how I get on. :)

Sorry to hear about the membrane...

I think that is a lesson to us all...these frost stat things are all well and good but it's the amount of space that it is trying to protect that may be the issue...

I though that my little cabinate was the dogs danglies but some -13nights have made me re-think the whole thing and whilst this is all fresh in my mind I am redesigning the 'box' for the next cold snap.

Cheers
All.

Hi Tim

You need to also check and make sure that all the housings, fittings and pipes are ok, as they can split as well.

Cant all of you keep the ro units indoors? After all you cant really produce water when out working!!!
I always think that if the van was nicked at least one bit of equipment was safe.

It might be a pain but my ro produces enough for a day and is then stripped out, wrapped in bubble wrap and put in the garage till next day. On a weekend nothing freezable is left in the van as even stuff that lasts overnight freezes when left from Friday to Monday. I found that out this Monday when it cost me 2 pumps.
Has anyone got any experience of digital Varistreams acting up when its cold or is it just coincidence?

Hi John
We have had both our digital varistreams and an old manual one play up this winter - they cut on and off on the flow setting they worked fine on through summer. I have increased the pressure switch side of things by a couple of points and  they are all fine. Must be the colder water.

It's definitely busted. I had it on flush for a bout 1 to 1.5 hour again and TDS is even higher.

Yea it's made up of lots of fine filter material and I assume that just cracks when frozen.

Well that's £200 at a time I don't really need this.  :-\

I had to up the pressure on mine the other day, I was thinking about it at the time, as water gets colder it also becomes thicker so it makes sense.
