Firstly you need to find out what your TDS actually is.

If it is as hard as you say, then you will need a water softner first, then though an RO system and finally, a resin filter/vessel to 'polish' it off.

once you've  decided what kind of system will suit your needs the company you buy from will supply you with the right system , thats what purefreedom did for me

You can't have everything.
If you're input TDS is around 300 then you're going to need to RO first unless you're feeling rice and can afford sacks and sacks of resin.

Andy I'm in west Sussex and run a pumped 4040 without a water softener and haven't had any problems, personally I think you have to balance the cost and hassle of running a softener that may prolong the life of your membrane, against the cost of the membrane. but you definitely need an ro.
If you need any small quantities of ro water Ie 25ltr containers filling let me know.

Some ro's come with a small 700ml Di canister so you may have found one already 700ml will do as long as you run the ro for a while before connecting it, when you turn on a Ro it takes a while for the TDS to get to its lowest.
