How about the battery powered Motor Scrubber for scrubbing floors?
http://www.readingconsumerproduct.com/store.asp?pid=15056&catid=19783
It may not be suitable for carpeted floors but it sure is versatile, ideal for those of you with boats, planes etc!!! In fact anywhere where you need to clean and don't have access to 240v power.
Seriously it is a good machine and with a full accessory kit is available for around £700 new.

Derek
I imported a machine that works on the same principal as the little D/F machine but found it to be pretty useless. Ended up binning it .
So I'd suggest a trial with this one before purchase................it might just be much better than the one I had.
The principal is ( blotting ) with pads under an oscillating plate
