Customer has the hump over the wool smell
« on: July 15, 2009, 08:03:40 pm »
Hi all,

I cleaned a lounge carpet today. Usual vacuum, pre spray with pre-spray gold, and extraction with TM.
I didnt notice anything too bad as i left, but I just had the lady of the house saying that there wooly smell had got worse since i left.
I said wool will smell being a natural fibre, but it will dissipate over night. ( It was hardly damp, as with the TM it is just steam).
She said she will call tomorrow if it's still smelly.

Is there anything else i could have done to stop this aroma. I have not been phoned before about this problem.
Thanks for any info

Something I've been saying for ages, not sure whether it helps but it makes me chuckle. I always say Oh you can tell it's a good quality wool carpet because the more it smells the better the fibre quality.  ;D

Not sure if it's true but let's call  it a white lie.

Always advised customers afterwards remember when you were a kid on the farm it smells like that back to nature. Very ECO methinks. ;)

When dealing with wool or wool mix i always tell them about the smell before i start, that way they dont think you are making excuses up, never had a problem then.

No accounting for customers.

That wool smell: customer" it smells really clean".

Me:"I'm glad you think that. Just think of all those freshly washed sheep out in he fields!"

Customer:" Yes, that's it!  (Happy me)" :) :) :)

(Alternatively I spray Prochem Lemon Refresh into the atmosphere of the room.)

Either way they think I've done a wonderful job.

Roger ;D

Benny

Always one that coms up from time to time and as mark said try and tell the client before the clean.

Still a bug bar mind you when the smell does come ::)

I always ask them to leave a small window open so the air will get in just to help rather than shut the room off totally..

Hi Mark,
Do you put it in the water tank?

All it needs is the room ventilating very well, it'll die down soon enough obviously.  Don't take any crap off her :)

I use the odour neutraliser from solutions, have a trigger spray mixed up and sometimes squib a few squirts into the room after extraction on a very woolly smelling one.

As Mark Powell said, if you recognise it as wool before you start, then tell the customer what to expect - it is going to smell like a wet dog..
That way you come over as knowing what you are talking about.
I do the same with stains. I dont go in blairing that "I will get all your stains out" cause I know some may not move. I explain that many stains do come out but some are set and will not move, but the carpet will be clean. Prepares them mentally.

I dont particularly like using anything that makes the room smell, certainly not without the customers approval. So many people today have allergies and I dont want to be known as the carpet cleaner who set of an allergy and possibly spoilt someones week.
I usually rinse with plain water, and its amazing how many clients say when I have finished "it smells nice and fresh". This means I have got rid of the source that was giving a dirty smell.

Hi Joe,
Thanks. I do say exactly the same thing about spots and stains etc.

He is American, and wife English, and they are expecting guests on Friday afternoon. With all this panic, I am suspecting that his guest is President Obama!!
Even though we did the job Wednesday afternoon, he called again this morning and said that the smell is still there. I offered to go this afternoon to have a good sniff, and see what I could do. But as the guests are coming now its too late.

I told him I used the correct pre spray(Pre spray Gold), and used the TM, which left the carpet touch dry, as i have done a thousand times before.
In future I will  leave all customers an after cleaning information sheet, stating all the things that I have told them over the phone, but they seem to forget...
