Wooden Floor with Varnish
« on: July 13, 2009, 07:19:32 am »
Hi Lads,

We have a wooden floor 20 x 15 feet. Floor boards are pine covered in varnish not emulsion sealer.

Does anyone know of a chemical that could be mopped over to remove the varnish.

Or is it just a case of simply apply varnish remover. You thoughts appreciated.

We cant use a floor sander too dusty for client.

Theres loads of good varnish removers on the market, but i tell you summit now,if your client dont like the thought of sanding because of dust, trust me using a varnish remover is just as messy, plus it'll stink the place out,not only that most removers are water washable ask yourself this
WATER+WOODEN FLOOR = loads of big probs indeed  :(
you could try some stuff called peel-away
http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/p/PALPA7/
but very pricey :o
BTW is it standard floor boards or old parquet flooring?
Been there,seen it,done it,just cant remember when

Dave
before you start to use peel away ask the client what they wont done to the floor after you've taken the old varnish off.
My exp with peel away has always been on brick/rendered surfaces, wood is a different issue,it still requires you to wash it off with water, this will not do the joints of the boards anygood, and may take ages to dry out.
You can hire a small flat surface sander with a vacuum attachment that with min the dust.
Pop along to your local Brewers paint merchant and ask them about FS10 its good stuff but expensive.
Please keep me up to date if you do this as i'm interested on how you get on.
Been there seen it done it ;)
