Claber lightweight hose reel
« on: December 13, 2013, 05:49:02 pm »
As above can be bought from Gardiners , Anyway for the past few weeks mine has made a knocking sound when reeling hose out & in .

Been to lazy to check it and it broke today on the handle side their is 4 screws connecting the outer disc to the centre of the reel and they have torn away from the disc , So unable to reel hose back in

Had it about 30 months now so not complaining just thought i better pre warn anyone with the reel as until my new one arrives i have only managed to get 70 metres on my garden hose reel with the additional 30 metres having to be coiled up by hand and slung in back of truck .

If the reel starts to wobble when reeling in or making a knocking noise it could be that the side fly nuts have worked loose. If they are tightened back up it will prevent this happening. If left loose then they can tear through the side discs quite rapidly as the forces put on the reel in use are quite strong.

I try and check the reel fly-nuts for tightness every few months.

Thanks for that Alex it has not wobbled had as stated not complaining at all it has been really good reel and what happened today is the first time i have had any issue with the reel at all .

Which is why i have ordered another one today and will be putting all the good working order parts of old reel on new reel and keeping the brand new pieces as spares .

I think i need to pull  hose in by hand a bit before reeling in  instead of putting all the strain on the reel when i have had  over 45 metres or more  reeled out . Mike

The knocking sound is sometimes a side disc pulled slightly out of shape and rubbing against the frame. A whack with a hammer soon puts it right!  ;D ;D
It's a game of three halves!

I think that these two posts show that these reels are not suited to everyone's work. They are marketed as 'lightweight' reels and as such perform very well for most users who want ease of use and a low weight. Others find that they need a more robust and bullet-proof reel which can soak up more knocks.

mine also works fine after 2 years of constant use.a little tip.if it starts to get a bit stiff when reeling out spray a bit of WD40 on the spindle areas.

mines a back up reel now as i use a radashe koreel for hot water use.i leave the reels in the van now.they are a lot more expensive and heavier but robust.also they reel in much quicker as the diameter is larger.

Daz That's a good reel redashe I got mine from Gardiners about 4 or 5 years ago its the big black heavy duty one that's bolted into the van, been brilliant. I know you've got the yellow one but would recommend them top notch reels 👳👳👳

Mine also broke. All I did was reverse the van over it and the side spindle snapped under the pressure.  ;D
