Mileage allowance
« on: April 22, 2009, 10:31:42 pm »
I understand that you can claim 40p per mile as vehicle expenses against tax for business mileage.
As window cleaners working on temporary sites all the time, does this mileage start from home and end when you get back or is it just from the first job to the last job?

From home and back to home is my understanding. Because you don't commute to the same place and back every day.
It's a game of three halves!

and from home back again to collect and anything buisness related like quoting, going to suppliers etc the best advice is to open a book with stop and start mileage then you cant go wrong and every journey is accounted for

before you go with the mileage check what your expences for your vehicle are. if you go mileage that is all you can claim to cover everything vehicle related, fuel, repairs, parts, etc. and the 40p is for the first 10,000 miles, it drops after that. you may find it better to claim for the individual things.
remember, which ever method you go with, you can not change it until you change the vehicle. :o

Thanks Niall, I did a quick check on the costs the other day.
I do a lot of miles before I reach the areas I work in so the 40p is quite a good deal for me.
Overall the costs of fuel, insurance, road fund tax, maintenance and depreciation total about the same as I would be claiming in mileage allowance.
