I have used slug pellets for the past few years in the summer.

The problem is as I have learned is that as you know hegdehogs eat mainly slugs, mmmm yummy.

but when a hedgehog eats a slug thats been killed by slug pellets the hegdehog will be killed what makes this worse is its a very slow painful death. apparently this is happens ALOT.

For this reason I am no longer going to use slug pellets and hope you dont either.

And also if you roast a hedgehog that's eaten slug pellets you will need to add more garlic.

When i lived  abroad for a while most of the neigbours in the street used to put beer in a glass over night in their garden,next morning glass would be full of them.
Guess the ones that were still alive they throw next door   
I am sure Derek will go tea total to help the wildlife

I was told leave out a glass of cider the smell attracts them, then they get drunk and die.

Do slow worms eat slugs, we got loads of them here.

now this is a topic for a farmer. good job i have some knowledge there yes slug pellets will kill hedgehogs but when the slug munches on the pellet it kill them by dissolving in its guts and basically burns the slug in half ( ahh poor slug ) it is possible for the hedgehog to die but it would have to eat a very fresh dead slug as the pellet is designed to disintigrate very fast. or as you can imagine when farmers spread tons on to cereal fields in the spring it would be laiden with dead wildlife and believe me you dont see lots of dead animals in the field. or they wold be quickly banned. you can by some eco friendly pellets not sure how effective they are ( perhaps alltec will sell them soon ). or if you have probs with hedgehogs in you garden buy some cheap foot high temp netting to stop them getting in.

it was good yeah very practical based hands on approach learnt a lot and was glad to see doin it right the few i have done. was nice to go up and have couple of days away. did you use free bird design for anything

A very good point Craig, I remember years ago hedgehogs were a common enough sight in the countryside, I haven't seen one now in a long time.
I remember too when most farmhouses kept ducks, they also eat slugs.
T he natural predator is always better than any poisons. That's why I always like to keep a cat around the house.

Your right we dont see many hedghogs and maybe see one every few months if were lucky and boy they move quite fast

I think salt will also kill slugs, that way you can keep the garlic content lower

salt ,sand or ground egg shells around your prize plants will do the trick

bitter/ale/guiness works best........they fall in and get drunk and drown!!!
