Getting insurance work
« on: March 20, 2009, 01:23:39 pm »
Do any of you guys do insurance work, not for fire and flood but for general CC / stain removals / after building work etc....

Is there a process for putting yourself forward for this type of work? I'm sure the bulk of it must go to the big franchise players, but just wondered if any of us small fish have got into this market.

Any advise welcome

Because of the logistics and trust factor insurance companies go for the franchises, one number and it goes through to a call centre and then distributed to each area. There are some independants but it goes to one place then subbed out, have a word with John Kelly but the stain bit is the bit everyone wants also they want you to do flood work and ideally want premises.

tried to remove a stain from a regular custy carpets a couple of days ago
a bad tea stain but without success, after telling her insurance company what had been done, they dismmissed this and sent in rainbow who tried to remove it, again without success, they refused to pay my invoice, but would pay rainbows invoice, even though with a travelling involved was twice as much,
she is getting a new carpet

because she is a regular custy, who got me a great job at a golf club, i didnt charge her for my efforts, but i had a feeling this would be the case when i offered to try to remove the stain

anyhow, im still going back to apply a protector on her new carpet when it is fitted

i have had one companies approach me for this type of work in the past but only got one small job from them, it turned out that quite a lot of cleaners were approched by the same company and offered insurance work, got a letter shortly afterwards from same people trying to SELL me a stone/ hard floor cleaning franchise, a politly declined their offer and have never been approached to do any more work from them since!  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

As some who involved in this work, forget it.

The max you get paid is £35 for attempted stain removal  that includes the first 45mins, report and photographs.

Cleaning carpets is than £2.00sqm, and if you clean and the policyholder is not happy, then in some cases you won't get anything. Remeber as well some rooms can be very small.

The fire and flood work has dropped of considerably and the prices are now pretty poor. Most insurers offer cash settlement or pass straight to a builder.

You also meet a lot people of who are in general very dishonest and will blame YOU just to get a new something or other. Take it from me some of these need a base ball bat right across their mouth. They are nasty nasty people, and the more money they have the worse they can be.

There are a lot of changes at present with many leaving the industry, those that are left will be required to do more for less. I know of one major national insurer that was asking a major builder in this country to take on all their building work, when they got first hand knowledge of what they would be getting into, they walked away.

You may be better with a local loss adjuster who deals with the less well known insueres. My advice though is if you want a stress free life were you can sleep at night and have the weekend off, THEN LEAVE WELL ALONE its absolute poo

I did it for nearly 20 years, glad I'm out of it now, had the good years and the money out of it but its not really there anymore.

BUT.

A carpet shop I work for put me in touch with a local business woman, she had had a flood previously, builder had repaired some water pipes which promptly burst on a Saturday morning while she was at work. Downstairs of house and brand new cream Axminster flooded out. I was recomended to her, got there with TM and sucked it all up. De hums and fans in etc etc. Saved the Ax replaced the damaged underlay etc, she was very happy.

Bill for £400.00, did it all on Servicemaster rates, she paid me direct and got the money from  the Adjuster who said he was happy with the work and did I want any more.

So £400.00 for  a few hours on a Saturday and service calls, fans,  bit of carpet refitting, dehums etc. Do I want to get back into it??????  MMMMMMMMM

Might wait until things quiten down a bit more, but still not convinced.
