Did you use a acid rinse??
If not you may have to "mist" over with acitic acid/ acid rince

i'm new so wait for others to comment but it sounds like its probably got a jute or hessian back, you over wet it with a high ph and not rinsed with an acidic to neutralise the alkali which encourages the hessian/jute to bleed or leach a yellow dye. if i'm right you'll  need a browning prescription or similar to rectify the damage.
marks out of 10 fellas, go  easy on me though.

My first thoughts from your verbal description is pet stains. Even distilled water could reactivate them if they hadn't been treated correctly at the time of the accident.

Could also be BHT. Or other reasons. Could even be fresh accident and they're looking to pass the buck :-X

Safe and happy cleaning :)

I would guess too high ph and caused browning in that case, you will need browning prescription or oxi brite mix.
Browning does occur on drying, so you wouldnt have seen it while you were still there.
If is is browning just the tips will be affected.
Dont overwet if you go to sort the job as the problem could be made worse, it would be wise to dry quickly as well.
Have you done any training?

Where are you based, maybe someone can take a look for you and then advise what you need to do.

For future reference Prochem Traffic Clean is ph11, so way to high too be considered safe on wool.
You would definately need an acid rinse. Prochem do one but I now use Hydramaster Clear Water Rinse as its very good value for money - a little goes a long way.

If you like Prochem products maybe the way to go is with Pure Clean (ph9) and a acid rinse.

If you in a hard water area acid rinse should be good for the tubes in your machine.

If you thinking of doing a training course then National Carpet Cleaners Association do one every couple of months - next one April. http://www.ncca.co.uk/NCCA_News.htm#Carpet_and_Upholstery_Cleaning_Courses
scroll down for dates.

Browning prescription mixed 1-1 with cold water, mist do not over wet, let dwell for 25 mins then extract with plain water or acidic rinse. Plenty of vac passes.
Then put dryers in if you have any.
when you spray the browning prescription on the yellowish marks will dissapear if it is browning, if not then its not browning and will be another problem.

If it was as dirty as you subsequently mentioned could it not be that the dirt was hiding the yellow marks which were already there but not seen because the carpet was damp.
Once dried the original marks could then be seen.

Could they have been pet stains from long ago or a a previous owner of the carpet?

Just a few thought to add to the mix as at this stage we don't have a definitive description of the carpet/construction/age/level of dirt

At the Wolverhampton shin-dig next month, my presentation will be about how to best avoid these sorts of problems. I, with the help of my gorgeous daughter, will run through many typical CCers problems and discuss how best to avoid them. Prevention is so much better than cure. I intend to go through cellulosic browning, BHT, shrinkage/rucking, overwetting/underdrying and other problems too.

Unfortunately, our two slots are first off in the morning and first off after lunch so if you want to attend you may have to drink your coffee at the same time.  I've only been allocated 30 minute slots, so if you have specific concerns, we'll be there all day so there's plenty of opportunity for smaller "breakout" sessions to discuss any of your concerns.

My aplogies if this comes over as an advert, but I felt that given the nature of this topic, and similar that arise from time to time, that my post could prove to be of benefit. I can understand if my post were to be deleted.

SAFE and happy cleaning :)
