Powder coating is this normal?
« on: February 23, 2009, 03:58:50 pm »
I have had this trolley since Jan this year it has had very light use as i mainly use the van mount

as you can see from the pictures the powder coating is starting to rub off where the footprint of the barrel goes and on the back where the barrel rests against the handle

IS THIS NORMAL?
Also would you find this acceptable for this to happen?

if anybody has had similar thing happen what did you do to help it

Thank in advance

Decided to make my own trolley down here in South Africa due the high freight cost from the UK.  Powser coated the first 2 but found them to be chipping in a very short time.  I now make them out of stainless steel for slightly more money.

With the Phnumatics they set me back R1800 that in pounds is 112 quid, a bargain.

Hi Lee
This is normal because the barrell sits on that area
Movenent of the barrell causes it to rub on the paint and as in your picture this happens
It has happend to mine I just bought a sheat of rubber from a Diy shop and stuck it on the base and handel area
this stoped further wear, nothing to wory about mate trollly works great never let me down so a bit of TLC and restore work and a bit of mod carnt complaine.

best regards LNM

In answer to your question - Is it normal?

No!

Especially if you've only had it a month!

They're skimping on the paint don't you think?

Unless they sold it to you as a second, send it back or get it sorted somehow with the supplier/manufacturer.  It's not up to the job it was designed for if it only lasts 6 weeks!!!
It should have a 12 month warranty, if they value their reputation surely they'll put it right?  After all the trolley is good but not exactly bargain price!

It looks to me that it has been applied to thinly. Also is there a primer coat on the base metal?
I used to own a powder coating business in Essex and we made trollies for CHIC cleaning. We used polyester powders which is what is required for any external coatings....(epoxy coatings are mainly for internal applications).
It allways amazes me that these items are not galvanised prior to paint applications as this would stop any corrosion showing through...saving money i suppose.
If you send the trolley back they would easily be able to shot blast the old coating off and reapply a base coat powder primer followed by a suitable top coat.
PHONE EM UP AND COMPLAIN.... ;)

I've had some experience powder coating crab pots when I use to manufacture them myself. It's the hardest (physical) job I've done in my life for a slightly above average wage and really achy muscles lifting really heavy and very hot metal objects with two pairs of tongues out of a baking hot kiln at arms length repeatedly.

Perhaps you haven't got any work in completely enclosed courtyards?

RAMS H&S won't permit hoses through corridors from the outer parking lots.

Ladders not permitted.

So how else would you do it?

That's just one reason why someone may buy a trolley, and there are others too.

Definition of prejudice?  A vagrant opinion with no justifiable means of support.

I have a trolley and van system.

I started with the trolley and need it for some jobs as i can't get anywhere near them with the van.

If i didn't have the trolley i would have to use my ladders.

i would say that it will be electro static paint. if the painters dont clean the metal with a metal cleaner the paint will chip very easily. as for the paint wearing down - electro static paint does not wear very well i know quite a bit about this because i worked in a factory that manufactured lights for oil rigs etc. High price and high quality but the painters didnt give a damn and just wanted to get as much production as possible and the cleaning aspect of the process is often overlooked or not done to a suitable standard. I doubt very much that the company you bought the trolley from does the painting themselves but you should contact them and tell them to replace it and in turn they will get on to the painters and demand better quality.

Hi, you say its wearing off, its most likley the grit etc. wearing it. You dont say its chipping so it most likely a proper job. Powder coating does wear off, put the base of a drum on your fridge door it will come of in mins thats thin powder coating!
Mart.

PJ - If I had work like that then I would use a backpack - much better.  Tried using a trolley and it was hopeless - 25ltr capaciy, overpriced and well, a bit silly looking.

We have 2 backpacks which only get light use but none-the-less are very handy.  18ltr I think and if I need more water I just bring an extra can of water in with me.

The amount of people on this forum who buy a trolley and then regret it is truly shocking.

You are more than welcome to disagree with me and put me right but I have a feeling I've won this one already.

well like i said allan my van has packed up big time (wouldnt touch another vito with a barge pole) and my system is bolted down inside so no use to me at moment

if it wasnt for the trolley i would be losing money and falling behind

and also since having the trolley i have actually used it more than my new van mount as it is easier to set up for the odd house

my thoughts are that you havnt ever owned a trolley system because if you were to own one believe me you would soon change your mind about them

personally i havnt heard of any one regretting buying one and yes i agree they cost a few quid but prices are coming down all the time look at the market leader in trolleys they have dropped by £150

I bought mine with intention of giving it to one of my lads to use however....... i recon im  gonna have to go back and buy another ;D

I agree with eclipse, couldnt do without me trolley.  But in answer to the original question, it looks like a purefreedom trolley and if it is, mines the colour blue and has gone exactly the same way, had mine since November 08, but it aint rusting or anything, so i wouldnt worry personally.
