oriental rug cleaning.
« on: March 23, 2005, 06:13:00 pm »
have been asked to clean an oriental rug.

i use hydramaster chemicals. knowing that i have to keep things on the acid side of the ph scale i was thinking of using natural orange pre spray followed by rinse out.

does this sound like a good choice or is there a better selection.

Hi Goron

I am not familiar with the finer points of Hydramaster's Cleaning Solutions, so cannot comment on them. It would be wise though, especially with oriental rugs, to use only Woolsafe Approved products.

In many cases, using an acidic rinse may not be the best route to take. Yes, this rinse will leave a carpet in acidic state, but quite often it is to correct a pH imbablance. Being safe with wool isn't just about pH, it's also about Alkalinity which is not quite the same as pH.  Most Woolsafe Approved solutions are quite close to neutral pH and are typically, but not always in the pH5.5 to 8.0 range. Sometimes you can have an unbuffered pH10.0 which is kinder than a buffered pH9.0.

So, in a nutshell, especially with your oriental, play safe and stick to Woolsafe Approved Solutions and TEST, TEST, TEST every single colour with every product you will use.  And make yourself an Easter Wish to attend one of the excellent Woolsafe Training Courses this year.

Safe and happy cleaning :)

Chemspec are running a "Woolsafe" course on June 8th 2005 at Brintons Carpets Kidderminster, the course includes a FREE lunch & a 2 hour guided tour of Brintons Manufacturing plant, its well worth the course just to get the free tour!
Anyone who has been round Brintons will tell you its a worth while visit.

Happy Easter to all!

It was the Chemspec Woolsafe Course that I attended a few years ago. After 20 odd years in the industry, you tend to think that there isn't that much left to learn. At the end of Julie Roberts teachings I was gobsmacked about how much I hadn't known about cleaning wool safely and became aware that what I had considered to be safe was definately harmful to wool.  Thanks Julie for showing me the light.

A highly recommended course.

Safe and happy (Woolsafe) cleaning :)
