Best 30ft pole?
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:58:00 pm »
Hi all long time no post lol :o
OK I have to say that as a person I am fairly placid when it comes to expectation of things I buy ::)
If I pay £1000 for a telly I expect it to last,if I pay £200 I dont lol!!
My point here guys is I am getting really fed up with buying water fed poles for them to only last a matter of months!
Surely out there exists a pole (around 30ft) that the clamps dont wear out in a matter of months.
Weight is not that much of an issue any more I am just really fed up of paying ££££ for a pole only for it to be useless within a matter of months!
What makes it worse is i Have a garage full of pole sections but they are no good because no clamps will fit them as they have worn down lol.
Anyhow the real question is can anyone recommend a decent long lasting pole around 30ft.

Thanks in advance guys :)

Gardiners SL-X, best 30ft pole bar none at an incredible price IMO.

If you are not bothered about weight then get an ally pole like a tucker or an omnipole.

Can't beat the sl x for usability though and mine has plenty of life in it after a good 6 months.

From your comments above it seems that longevity is your main concern and weight is not a worry. The answer for you would be an Aluminium pole. Tucker, Omnipole or the Brodex Prolong ranges would be your best bet.

It would be worth trying these poles out before buying though as their handling characteristics may be quite different to what you have previously used.

There are major benefits to composite poles (weight, rigidity, ease of use), but with any composite material pole (Fibre Glass, Carbon fibre) wear is always going to be an issue as the surface is relatively soft compared to a metal pole. The main cause of wear on any pole is dirt which is pulled up the pole from the inside on the pole hose. Keeping the pole hose clean (wiping down after each property etc) is the best thing you can do to prolong the life of any pole.

Giving it a hosing down at the end of each week or after working in a gritty/sandy environment will also help considerably.

Slx is topnotch. I cant see it going beyond 18 months though. The problem is its so good you want to use it for everything. Recently i had to go back to a fg xtel for a job and it was a right pain in comparison. The flex is what you notice the most.

I may though try the hybrid at some stage but I'll never use a glass fibre again.

Once the gel coat has rubbed off on the SLX it seems to wear very rapidly, at least mine is. I think it's going to be pretty worn after a year. As said before, it's such a good pole that mine gets used and abused on every job it will reach. I hope it lasts a year - less than £8.00 a week.
