Hi i was wondering what would be a reasonable charge for house cleaning? i was thinking £10 an hour for a minimum of 2 hours basic cleaning and anything else like ironing and window cleaning a little extra, is that too high a price?

Id go more around the 14 to 17 per hour ,but this also depends on where your from .

I go in at £10 as well. Had quite a few enquires but a lot don't follow through, not sure if it is the price but have had a couple of comments back - like - well i got someone for £6 an hour.So that just can't be competed with,

£10 per hour is fine if its just you cleaning and you don't plan on paying tax but with respect its not a sustainable hourly rate for a business.

Example:

Pay someone £8 per hour to clean for you = £8.74 including holiday pay (min 24 days per year - goes up in April)
Pay Employers NI at 11% = £9.70 per hour.

Now take into account you need employers liability insurance, public liability insurance then all cleaning materials and equipment and then throw in a mileage allowance and you're making a loss already!

My breakeven averages at £10.54 per hour.

As for the "I can get someone at £6 per hour"? Good luck to them but remind them they are responsible for the safety of the cleaner in their home and that they will be uninsured, breaking the law and will in the end get what they pay for.

Have you considered pricing the jobs individually rather than an hourly rate ?

We found that when charged by the hour, some customers get the stopwatch out and hate it if you leave even 5 minutes early.
