Red wine stain - what chems?
« on: November 20, 2008, 11:15:08 pm »
Question: Are these chems good for red wine removal -

Prochem Stain Pro - for stage one - berry / grape stain removal

Prochem Coffee stain remover - For stage two - the tannin stain

I had one of those crappy little prochem stain removal kits, you know the one's with 4 small bottles, red, yellow, blue and green - well I have used the kit for a red wine stain and it worked a treat - first the berry/grape stain then the secondary treatment for the tannin stain.

Anyway I bought the above replacements to use for red wine stains and until tomorrow I've never had to use them, the custy said one CC has tried and failed to remove the stain, custy didn't know what method the guy had used, anyway I'm going to try tomorrow - all i know is its a cream carpet (they always are!!)

What chems do you guys find best

Paul

AS ever, it depends.

If it's a synthetic carpet then a red wine stain should come out really easy. If wool then think again.

I've always believed in Red RX from Prochem and if still having difficulties then use the hot iron technique and if all else fails the sodium metabisulfite.

Would hydrogen peroxide be safe to use if the carpet is wool?

Ive used it on loads of wool but ive always started with a cotton bud on a vey small part of the stain. Then blast with with a hair dryer.

Hi Paul

I am fairly new to carpet cleaning, did the NCCA course back in Feb.I did a carpet clean last week where the customer had spilt a glass of red wine on a cream 80/20 bedroom carpet, right by the doorway.

Tried my usual m/s,various spotters, and was left with a pinkish remain, palm size.

After getting advice from another forum and speaking to John Kelly at Restormate ( a really helpfull bloke ) I returned today to clean her lounge carpet,it gave me an oppurtunity to try some hydrogen peroxide 9%, which I bought from my the local chemist,80p for a 200ml bottle.

I diluted it,(did the usual a pre test),tryed a small area at a time and dryed it with an hairdryer

Result, the pinkish remain had gone!

Regards

Steve

John - The correct spelling is Sodium Metabisulphite.

Prochem Red Rx is the boy, my wife spilt a full glass of red wine on our pure white wool rug, i had been away for a few days and she told me the news. So the wine had been in the fibers for about 48 hours.

Red Rx removed all of the stain, when i sprayed it on it just started to dissapear before i got a chance to start blotting. Amazing stuff.

Does the stuff spray alright 'cos it's quite thick?
Without going outside and checking doesn't it say not to be sprayed?
Only problem I found using it was that it left the area stained too clean compared to the rest of the carpet.
