It looks like bitumen or engine oil.

White spirit on a cloth then emulsify with detergent/ms.

How did you do that?


The dirt is my foot prints (wet day).

I want to know what type of tile they are and how you would clean them.

I used a microsplitting product for stone and a black pad but the ground in dirt just wouldnt come off.

Yes solutions no8 although Nick now tells me he has a more aggressive cleaner.

Are you on about Prochem QMT?? I have tried that chemical on numerous occasions with NOT very gud results.

these look like minton hollins (or similar) tiles(encaustic). they are very porous and can take on permanent stains. you could initially try and strip them with acrylic polish stripper although they look fairly dry(unfinished) to me. failing this nitromors paint stripper may work. try it on a small area (pef out of sight) and cover it with clingfilm to stop it evaporating. leave for 30 mins and see if it has done anything. if it leaves a dark patch it is just the methylene chloride solvent soaked in to the tile. it will go when it dries. any white deposit left is wax from the stripper. this can be removed with meths. i would use this technique only as a last resort as it is not to healthy due to fumes. i have refinished many of these and i remember on had marley tile adhesive trowel marks that simply would not come out no matter what i used. after they were sealed it was not really noticeable and the customer was happy.............

I had a problem similar to this, I tried pads, steam cleaning & every chemical I could think of, and none of them worked.
THEN someone recommended Brillo Degreaser, 5 lts cost about £12.00 and the results where amazing.

Ritchie - the 'markins', by this I take it you mean my dirty footprints?

The problem is this floor is only about 8ft square as its a entrance porch and about 40 years old so a real hassle to clean and price right.  Any idea of the replacement cost of this floor?

I got some info from a company called posh floors. They where at the show and do all types of stone cleaners and courses.  Anyone heard of them and whats the courses like?

Richie how did you use QMT?

I would recommend:
        Apply QMT to floor using a mop, brush or scrubbing machine do not spray. Then scrub in chemical using e.g Rotary. Rinse with clean water then use wet vac pick up. This chemical is very good and does work!
