Flat battery
« on: October 19, 2008, 07:04:42 pm »
Hello, I hope you can help me with a problem our system has developed.  It is a Ionic 650 Thermo Pure machine and we are finding that the battery on the system seems to go flat on a regular basis.  We charge it every night but lately we have found that when the battery goes flat it takes the power from the van's battery.  I wonder if it could be a problem with the split charger?  When the van runs it does put power back into the systems battery so it does seem that it is working.  Yesterday we had the Thermo Pure on for 30minutes and after this the van's battery was totally dead.  Any help appreciated.

Don't use a split charge relay ;D

I don't know how long a battery should last with a thermopure, but we use 85ah batteries with 100psi Surflo's and they last at least two days (400lt/day)

Charge the batteries from the mains and don't let them draw power from your vehicle battery.

I carry two batteries - one in circuit and one spare.  When the one in circuit goes flat, I change it for the spare and put the flat one on charge that night, then put it back in the van the next day as the spare.

Simple ;)

ive had  similar problems myself, after having charging systems check which was ok , buying a battery charger to charge battery which did,t help, took battery to a auto electrician, found a dead cell not holding charge
needed a new battery , now all ok

How long have you had the battery for, if you get over a year out of it your doing well, might be that you just need a new one.  I don't like the idea of split charge relays, it puts extra stress on the alternator.

Your alternators working fine but certainly sounds like your split charge relay is up the swanny, a relay is a switch and neither battery should draw from the other if this is happening then change the relay.
