Paint on glass/removal
« on: September 27, 2008, 08:04:51 pm »
Got a custy who has had there georegian windows painted. The firm did not do a particularly tidy job. Custy wants me to clean the paint of the glass and to tidy up or square off the paint around the edges of the glass. Would a craft knife work around the edge of the window and then use a scraper to lift the paint of the glass. Will i need anything else to remove the paint. This house has 56 windows each made up of 12 small panes. Its a big job and i dont want to say no without looking into it yet

I must admit that finding the time to do this job is going to be hard enough.

pop along to a painters supplier

get a paint scraper ( it'll be red in colour " it will take stanley knife blades, buy them when you by the scraper, it'll be a slightly thinner blade

run the point around the window gently, then just scrape

job done

672 times then job done

you will go around every pane anyways, as you said, i would do it on a hour rate, otherwise you will either hate the job as its too cheap, or you will hate the job as it'll bore you to death

They wont bat an eye at the price. They are charging the builders who have been in the house for 6 months. I just dont want to bite of more than i can chew.

If it was me i'd tell them to get the painters back in to do a proper job - send them up a ladder!

I would quote them at about 100 pains an hour@£20 an hour.

But it depends on how bad they are

The solution maybe to put my son in the house on paint cleaning duty. Give him a days head start then go in and clean behind him and help finish off. Make sure the custy does a quality check before we leave. Should be no probs then. Going to price the job up as an estimate of time taken. Then if there are any snaggs, we wont lose out. They can take it or leave it.

Now where did i put my red scraper?

Have you got to do the outsides too? I'd be a bit wary of scratching the glass too (easy done). Good luck.  :)

I always use one of these

(dam this stupid forum - can never put up pics oin the body of the post using )

So see attached below..

with plenty of water and detergent for doing Georgian windows.

Price per hour for the whole day or 2 days if needs be, advise if it takes less, then your charge less. But give them the maximum price so they know how much it will cost in total.

I did one house inside and out like that, and cleaned after by WFP - took the whole day but it looked the bee's once i finished! The custy really appreciated it afterwards, i got loads of local work after that from that area.
