Internet Directories
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:05:16 am »
Have been contacted by a rep for 'the largest chain of online directories in the UK' customerstreet, ufindus, moreuk, smilelocal etc.

I don't normally bother with sales reps but I know she will be calling back so I thought I would find out some 'real' information to give her back.

Does anyone one have anything positive to say about these directories and how much work do they bring in?

accessplace and zettai come top in my immediate area, followed by the google maps result -  in which I'm at the top, the only one with my details filled in on it!  If you haven't done that already, get on the case now, it's free!

I think a lot of people look at the web address in green writing on google, and scan down until they get past the free directories and find a "proper" looking web address to click on.

Only ever had one enquiry from a free online site, cant remember but I think it was ufindus or touchlocal.  Most of them are piggy-backed off the thomson directory, so if your company details change in the Thomson be prepared to have to contact about 10 free sites to get them to update your details, they don't seem to keep updated.

Rich

I signed up with customerstreet about 6 months ago for the supply and fit side of my business, mainly because I didn't have a website for it.

It cost approx £300 up front plus approx £39 per month - for that I got a templated style website, which I have added pages to, plus listings on ufindus, smile local and the flooring directory etc

They keep phoning me trying to sell me an all singing all dancing website for £700, even though I am getting zero enquiries from my existing one and all their other directories.

I have made a diary note to give them three months notice to cancel it - my advice to you is DON'T TOUCH THEM WITH A BARGE POLE !!

I wouldn't bother myself especially if when she calls you back she asks for money over the phone. I am always very cautious of cold callers, got caught out a few times and swore never again!

Directories are a waste of time anyway in my opinion!
it's a dirty job but someones gotta do it!

With effort you can get above all of the directories, we are above all of them for most searches in this area, it took time though.

These are a wast of time imo. Search directories will often bring negative results. A lot of peops will search the web for cleaners and they are rarely price shoppers.

They need to find you near the top of the first page and find out if you meet their criteria.

It's not rocket science and all the tools are there....it's just converting what you do to what they want.

She phoned back and after the usual spiel I stated that I knew of a firm who signed up (Carpet Care, thanks Steve) and who were getting zero enquiries after several months. She sounded surprised but didnt try any further and that was the end of it.

I didnt think their was a chance I would sign up really but did want to give her some evidence that such directories didnt work.
