Is there a pump that will.....?
« on: July 28, 2008, 07:29:51 pm »
Is there a pump that will push water through 60 metres of 5mm internal diameter hose (without any additional gadgetry i.e. varistreams) without overheating?

I have just fitted a 100psi Shurflo which cuts out after about 10 minutes running. After a further 45 minutes it will start up again but then stops again fairly quickly.

I have noticed that the negative terminal on the (new) leisure battery is 'red hot' when this occurs (the battery is presently being checked out by the supplier)

Is it better to have an 'on demand' pump or a pump with an internal bypass?

Thanks

Mike

The smaller the hose, the harder the pump has to work to do the same job as the water flow is being restricted.
I use 8mm (minibore) as I get a good flow. I will add a short length of 6mm (microbore) when I come to any properties with steps to make it easier to pull the lighter hose up/down the steps, but I need to turn the flowmeter up to compensate for less water flow.
Too long a length (i.e. 60m of 5mm hose) is too small in my opinion as the flow is too low, pressure too high and hose is initially full of trapped air when connecting the extra length.

Alex

Is your flojet 60psi?

In an earlier posting you said that you 'altered the pressure switch so that it cut out at a lower pressure'.

Why?

Thanks

no its 100psi

it makes it prime alot quicker, instead of taking 5secs, it takes about 2, so i always have a steady flow,

i wont ever open the pole and it will fly 15ft and then dip to 5 and then back up to ten,

it just stays steady,

For anyone that read the post:

The problem was the battery (only 2 weeks old).
Got an exchange battery today and have been running the Shurflow pump (100psi) with 60 metres of 5mm internal diameter hose (with trigger valve) for about 2 hours with no problems so far.

If the pump or battery become defective within the next week or two, I'll let you all know.

Thanks to those who responded to my Query.
