Re-using the water
« on: July 28, 2008, 09:41:09 pm »
Hey all, long time no speak :o
I know this subject has been covered before  ::)
OK then,I am talking about using the water that comes out of ro as waste.
The general feeling was that this water would be even dirtier so it would ruin the membranes quicker.
Today I took readings and this is what I got:
Water from tap going into merlin=327 ppm.
Water from RO(through resin) into my tank 0 PPM.
Water from ro down the drain  121 ppm??
So the waste is over 200 ppm less than my tap water??
I think with this in mind re-using it by pumping it back through the ro is viable.
any thoughts?

Are you sure these results are correct?

Waste water from RO has got to be higher than tap water going into RO. Doesn't make sense. What's your TDS reading after RO but before DI?

the way i see it, the ro has split the water, sending the bad down the drain

re using the bad water wouldnt make sense. its been sent down the drain for a reason

if not there would be no such thing as waste water and it would all go through

Unless you've connected up your waste water from RO outlet to DI by mistake and your good water from RO (TDS 121, which you think is waste) which you're flushing out ;D

What Petski has said could happen if the vast majority of the impurities are calcium as this will be trapped in the membranes.
For most of us the impurities are split amongst various things.

OMG you are such a sceptical lot ???
I assure you that the RO is set up correctly,I have been using the Merlin for 2 years now with same membrane and filters (400ltr per day produced).
Once again my tap tds is 327.
My water going into resin is 001 and after resin 000.
My waste water is 121.
Believe me I was as surprised as anyone of you guys :o
But as we arent all scientists maybe we ought to reserve judgement before we so quickly dismiss a persons post ::) ::)
Is it not possible that the membrane and filters hold a lot of the impurities??
Thanks

You must be one of the very few fortunate ones to have a lower waste water TDS than water going in from tap. Perhaps you could recycle it through RO again. Speak to ROman and ask their opinion. :)

okay belive you it must be what neil said then, my carbon filter had to be changed after six months using 400 litres a day as it slowed away down must depend a lot on whats in the water
