I have now got a second broken varistream, also another 2 with the buttons broken.

The question is have you had a broken varistream ?

  It doesn't matter how far your hose is out, it still has to go through the same length whether it is on the reel or pulled out, it is the hieght you have your pole extended that counts.

Not necessarily, the pressure build up is different when coiled up, that's why with adjusting it, you always need to have a certain length rolled out.

Varistream switches are too weak and vunerable for the job they do. I had a spate of problems with them. I now keep a spare on the shelf ready for the next failure. I was contemplating putting a seperate on/off switch in the line so that the varistream was only used as a speed controller and the switch didn't get so much use.

I hope the digital one will be better.

i switch mine on in the morning , it does not get turned of till the end of the day. save switch as only turning on/ off twice a day

My original Varistream Mk1 is still going strong 3 years old next month.  I have whacked it a few times but it still works as well as ever.  Bit like the wife, treat her mean - keeps her keen! 

I do also have a Flo Controller and now another digital varistream.  I notice in the instructions for the new digital williamsons have put a cop out clause, if you use anything other than half inch hose you invalidate the warranty is basically what they are saying.  Still mine's never played up anyway.

Pj, that was the same with the old one as well, the whole if you don't use this hose this and that. Ridiculous of course, everyone uses mini or microbore hose now.

Thats like a Catch-22 clause. How would they ever know what hose you use?

We ditched ours after they gave up. Now use flow control taps on the poles. No problems.

With the analogue Varistream, to avoid problems, I have always fitted, close to the unit, a metal "toggle switch" to put the vairistream on and off.
The switch also is very visible from outside the van if you are looking to see if you have actually switched the unit on.           
Cut the red power wire going in to the Varistream and reconnect each of the 2 cut ends  ( one to each of  the 2 terminals ) at the back of the switch.    Make sure you buy a metal one as the plastic breaks easily and also only one that has 2 terminals on the back,( not 3)
