could i not just use some exterior hammerite or something similar to protect my van floor?

IMO Hammerite would chip very quickly, protectakote is rubberized or something about £70 is worth spending IMO do not skrimp on important things or it will cost you more later.

pop into homebase, I know they used to sell it. if they do make sure you wear gloves when you apply it or you will look like a smurf for ages (if you use blue PK)

Why does going into Homebase bare-handed make you look like a smurf? Makes me look like a Wally!

Hammerite does not set hard, it is designed to stay 'soft' so if you scratch it sort of 'repairs' the mark reducing rust.
It will smuge, great for gates and railing but not for 'trafic areas'.
