Cities - How do you manage?
« on: May 31, 2008, 04:18:43 pm »
After spending a few days in an apartment in the centre of Edinburgh with the family got me wondering how you guys work in these situations ? The place we were in was on Jeffrey st just off the Royal Mile, it was communal tenament style stairwells that I wouldnt want to drag my gear to the top of & I could nt see you been able to park a truckmount outside. The only obtion to me would be Dry fusion and that would be bad enough and have its limitations.
It just goes to show the ongoing debate of pricing is so relative to the environment you have to work in.
Mike , the country bumpkin from Whitby & glad of it!

You are right Mike Edinburgh is a tradesman's nightmare . Parking restrictions are horrendous and some of the old buildings are a nightmare to get your gear into. So yes those sort of jobs have to be charged accordingly as sometimes it has to be a two man job and parking is expensive. However that is the case in many cities I'm sure but work is work we take the rough with the smooth and charge twice as much for the rough.  ;)

Yep Edinburgh city centre jobs are a nightmare,Edinburgh council are gradually expanding their "periffery" zone too more and more of the surrounding areas are now difficult and expensive to park in

Edinburgh does have a good parking dispensation department though you can park on a single yellow line and phone for dispensation and get an hours free parking, just tell them you are dealing with a fire or flood  ;D

Spent few days in Edinburgh last year and did think the same ........ even Westminster parking seemed more straight forward  :( :o

Happy to head into London VERY early, missing start of rush hour. Get to park as close as possible, as people are leaving spaces if early enough. Luckily i am usually done by lunchtime and heading back to Surrey long before afternoon school run begins  ;)

Newcastle-Upon-Tyne can be a bit of a nightmare, so much so I am seriously thinking of knocking any city centre work on the head! I got a £30 ticket a few weeks ago for being outside a customer's house. Beginning to think its more trouble than its worth!

Mark, Many areas have system of paying by text from mobile ........can renew from job and not have to move van  ;D
Westminster and Wandsworth do this ........... most of my work is in Wandsworth Borough and majority of trips to Westminster are free parking very near to Big Ben  :P
